They don't, but online wasn't an option back on the GBA era, so it's like tough shit, you either get friends l-lol and battle with them, or you settle for the dedicated "competitive" areas of the game, specially on Emerald since it was one if its biggest draws to begin with.
Getting RNG'd does NOT equate to difficulty, so you can't even pull the meme "le git gud Xd" card because RNG is beyond that.
Good fucking luck avoiding OHKOs that don't miss, good fucking luck hitting your moves when the foe has a flawless Brightpowder, good fucking luck never hitting through confusion or paralysis, good fucking luck getting set to sleep for five turns, good fucking luck getting critted in the worst moments.

Getting the gold symbols in Emerald has to be the most grueling objective you could possibly set yourself. You literally have to arm yourself with pseudolegends with damn good IVs, EV trained and with egg moves, or otherwise you're basically fucked. And even then, the higher your streak, the higher the chance of RNG fucks you over.

Gamefreak can't make good offline battle facilities without resorting to literal artificial difficulty. The Frontier usually gets a pass because it was the start of them being more inviting to competitive gameplay in-universe, but that doesn't change the fact the place is rigged to hell and back and is mechanically fucked to put you at a disadvantage.

This was my least favorite but I somehow managed to get the silver symbol for it way back. It pretty much took decent pokes AT LEAST with the right natures, a lot of tries, and a lot of luck.

it's not arteficial difficulty, it's just statistics. Say you have a tyranitar with stone edge as your main pokemon, the odds of hitting 10 stone edges in a row is only 10% aka you're just setting yourself up to be fucked. People look at smogon and say "ah yes I'll use fire blast as my STAB/coverage move of choice just as smogon suggests" when you absolutely have to use flamethrower unless you're an RNG god. Similarly you absolutely have to use fast pokemon, preferbly those that set-up speed. Your conkeldurr/mamoswine/whatever might seem strong but every turn your opponent gets to hit you is another turn where you can be put to sleep or flinched or critted. If you're on a streak you need to avoid that at all costs.

People are dumb and think that they can go into these facilities and use the same strategies as they use on showdown without realising that on showdown you play to win while in the battle tower you play to not lose.

Statistics are fine when they are not tied to the goddamned natures of your Pokémon.
This place basically forces you to raise Pokémon with shit natures for arbitrary reasons, because if you don't you will never even be able to attack.
It's not fun and it's not fair. Level grinding was already boring enough in the old games, and this made you raise Pokémon that were useless and flat out bad in any other battling context. And even if you do everything right, the RNG still has the ability to fuck you over, just because, with little to no blame on you the player.

Where's the skill in that? Ironically this facility requires more luck than the Pike, which is the supposed luck facility.

The Pyramid is just really really slow, but it's definitely not the hardest.
All trainers just have the one Pokemon which usually goes down without much trouble.

What I still don't understand is how running away from wilds works. I would imagine a timid 350 speed Latios would manage to outspeed anyone, but I still get the "Can't escape!" more times than not.

Not gonna lie, felt fucking good to do it since as a Kid I could only get silver medals and that's it, also, being able to speed up the battles and shit really helped, then I transfered the save to my Emerald cartridge, RNG is bulshit and not fun at all if it happens to you (CPU also cheats).
