Gap years are becoming less numerous, with the last games being sandwiched between gap years was Diamond and Pearl. Then again, it was highly unusual for FR and LG to share a release year with Emerald, so if they spaced Emerald out to 2005, Ruby and Sapphire would be the only games sandwiched between gap years.

ORAS was a remake and we're not likely getting remakes this generation. A year break makes sense.

SM2/Stars/whatever you want to call it in 2018, then Gen 8 in 2019, then maybe DP remakes in 2020.

I'm actually expecting another drought like the one between DP and Platinum. GF and the Pokemon Company just finished celebrating the 20th anniversary, and to follow up on that would be Poke-overload.
