I'll be honest here, this episode could have been good if it had been about anyone but Mamane. Mamane is shit, no-one likes him and his Fato is even worse. The only possible outcome is that people get mad that he isn't really leaving because we'd all be glad to see him go.

Yonemura isn't a bad writer, and has written a number of good episodes in his tenure here. Really the only problem here is the character of focus. So, the episode is not objectively bad so much as the character it's about. As I said earlier, if it was done with literally any other character we could have had a nice comfy feely episode.

In any event I only view this as one data point that should be taken with a grain of salt. Any survey like this will have its limitations, its own methodology/scope, and its own potential sources of bias. All I think we can really say is that Brock wins out overall, and most of the girls are at least reasonably popular (Iris is the main exception, of course). A shame that Bonnie didn't get much love, but at least she did better than Iris.

the logic is that recent characters do better in polls. i directed it at serena because she is a character who only recently left and probably benefited from it in the poll, and will likely drop as time goes on. i wasn't trying to make any other point other than that.

The romance subplot stuff matter sobviously, but she also had an element to her character, however poorly it was handled in year one, that lot of people found refreshing, and that was a character arc centered on personal growth and maturation more than on winning so and so sort of competition. The performances were less an end in and of themselves than they were a means toward a broader end, of Serena discovering who she was, who she could be, and what drove her and inspired her.
