Too often when making "early gen" Pokemon, everyone just removes all details, when that isn't completely accurate.

I did remove some of the red knobs -- I didn't completely see their point from a functional standpoint (in b4 "they're for _____!"). I left the pattern, as the body was plain without it, but I did dull the color slightly. Yes, early gen Pokemon did have bright colors, but Excadrill spends time underground, so I didn't see the need for such a bright red.

Early gens did often have a simplified color pallet, though, so I used the same color for the markings as the nose.

Here's Golurk. This one may see some more opposition than Excadrill, but I'll try to rationalize my thinking again.

Obviously, there's a lot of details here, but most serve a purpose. The crack shows its internal energy which the seal is meant to contain -- obviously a large part of Golurk's design, so those stay. The bangles are another part of the design which look nice, and removing them would be to the detriment of the revision.

Therefore, I simplified where I could: the squiggles on its hands and shoulders (which also apparently show the Pokemon's internal energy). Considering the chest crack/seal are a fine example of the leaking of energy, I didn't see a need for the other four squiggles. A change which will meet some critique, I'm sure, but hopefully my reasoning makes sense.

Otherwise, I made a slight change to the color -- I sampled from a screenshot on Bulbapedia, making it a little less saturated.

It's arguable on Golurk, but the details on Excadrill are fine, although I admit giving Excadrill a light underbelly (ala Sandslash) was my first thought. I thought about it, then reconsidered...

The pattern would certainly be more blob-like in the sprite, but there are plenty of Pokemon with more intricate patterns in Gen I -- Arcanine, Electabuzz come to mind. Hell, some of the wing patterns on Butterfree would seem more difficult to show in sprite form, but came out okay in RBGY.

If you were the requester, I'd gladly edit the Pokemon further, though.

Early gen monsters often had limited color palettes compared to today's designs -- particularly, I looked to Dragonite (orange, tan, some green) and Kingdra (blue, tan, some white). Though not a Dragon-type, I also looked at Tyranitar for some inspiration for how to make a color palette for a comparatively busy early gen mon. Since Noibat's predominate color is purple, I decided to run with that over the teal and red.

A common design feature, especially in Gen I, was toe spikes. After removing the red spots on Noivern's feet, I considered adding some toe spikes -- but then I looked at Aerodactyl. After deciding against toe spikes, I also went with making the claws black to match the rest of the wing (which I made completely black, removing the purple stripes completely).

I debated whether or not to keep the wing protrusions, but ended up keeping them as in the model, they connect to the grasping claws. I did make both these protrusions and claws shorter, however.

And yes, I edited the eyes to make them more early gen. To be honest, I probably could've gotten away with keeping the originals) with minor tweaks), but I think these eyes fit decently.

There's probably going to be even more critique on this one, but hell, it's okay enough for me. Let me know what changes you guys would make and I'll consider them! These have been more fun than recolors, anyway.

I did Pansear in one of the threads from a year ago, and I kept the same basic idea here. While some Pokemon did have large heads/tiny bodies in the first few gens, for the most part, anatomy was a little more natural. I shrunk the head while maintaining the rest of the body size.

While the original leaf-shaped tail wasn't too bad, I opted for a more normal tail to both fit with the Pansear redesign (which I will be posting later), and to avoid the more unsubtle design features the monkeys have. And yes, I'm aware that this was likely due to the set being a secondary starter set, but I think the head shape and colors will do a fine enough job.

The green fur/pants has always looked odd to me, so, like Pansear, I decided on a tan belly. Honestly, the belly is more because it was quick and easy to do than anything else, though I suppose I could've tried blending the tan and green.

Last of the big changes is the eyes. Earlier on, if Pokemon didn't have Toriyama eyes, they had more detail in the eyes to show reflection. A commmon complaint I've heard about the monkeys is their lifeless eyes, so by adding detail makes them seem that much more alive.

If anyone has any comments, criticisms, I'm open to suggestions. I save every layer of changes so I can go back and edit pretty much anything.

I made all sorts of versions, but I got the best result when I layered them. Some were too teal, some too white, or even too light or too dark, but this seemed to be a good mix of them all.

I'm in the process of adding the Pokeball button to act as a sort of nose/mouth for Voltorb for fun -- if it doesn't look good, I won't keep it.

I've always felt Braviary looks pretty early gen as-is.

Simplified the Native American headdress/war bonnet by removing [most of] the white feathers -- I kept the bottom two to ensure the war bonnet still looked like one. I entertained the idea of removing the cere completely (or matching the beak color), but I thought it made for a good certerpiece for the "headdress," so I opted for matching the talon color.

I considered making the tail feathers white/tan to match the head (a la a bald eagle), but the red fit much better.

So we have here probably the most changed old -> new gen edit I've made so far.

As most of you probably know, part of the inspiration for this line comes from the baku, a dream eating beast of legend. I googled some images, and one in particular caught my eye -- it was a blu-ish depiction (which I found fitting, as the other tapir/baku inspired line, Munna/Musharna, is pink). It had the typical older depiction of a baku -- with an "bear’s body, an elephant’s nose, a tiger’s feet, an oxen tail, and rhinoceros eyes."

Most depictions I saw had tusks, so those were added. The stripes on Hypno's legs were an homage to the tiger's feet. Oddly enough, many artist renditions also featured odd looking eyebrows, so I added those (I figured those looked good since they make Hypno look more like the child-luring beast it has been said/shown to be).

The red eyes were added because many later-gen Pokemon don't have white sclera -- red was decided on mostly because it looked menacing, and also for a nice contrast with the blue bodies.

Working on Golduck now.

Not much to change with Psyduck. I can't do much with the eyes, since it's SUPPOSED to look dazed and confused. I opted to slightly shrink the body to enlarge the head, and give it a pallet more in line with the deeper, darker colors often seen today. For reference, I used the colors from Heliolisk -- thought the yellow/orange could make it double as a rubber duck while still keeping similar colors to the original.

Requesting Gen 1 Heatmor. Would like to see what he looks like if he came out earlier.

I'll work on Koffing, but I felt more inspired with Weezing.

The idea is that, like Psyduck, newer gens use deeper colors -- and much therefore, much more contrast. Hence, why the toxic symbol is red. Red, inset eyes (with bags) due to gases (plus matching with the symbol).

Since there's a lifeform budding off of the original head, I decided removing the pupils would add a certain creep factor (blah, blah, blah pollution is bad).

After doing so many of these, I definitely think the key is to change as little as possible.
