Okay, so I just got finished with Pokemon Trading Card Game 2, and my roommate, having noticed I had been playing it for a while and that I was enjoying it bought me a couple IRL starter decks from the XY Evolutions set.
I recognized several of the cards, but was really confused because 1. a lot of the numbers were way larger than I knew they were supposed to be and 2. all the poison types were eyeball now instead of leaf. He said "yeah, this is a set where they updated a bunch of old cards to fit the new meta. Appeal to nostalgia while handling powercreep and all that."

Also, I'm looking at a lot of the cards in this and there's a bunch of stuff I don't recognize. Two more types, on top of dark and steel, which I remember them adding back in gen2. Might have had a few. One I don't recognize I think is fairy, but the heck is that Jangmo-o's? Did they make dragon it's own type now? Also, what is GX? I can't read those moonrunes.

What have I missed since the days of yore? It looks like quite a lot.

Eh, not really. There are a lot of little changes but the game has played pretty similar to standard since BW base.

In fact we're only just starting to move back towards evolutions as a playstyle.

yes, two of the four cards that had to be specifically banned from standard in the same deck was just wonderful. Also Feraligatr/Parasect was literal solitaire once it was set up. Not to mention every deck running multiple cleffas turning the game into a coinflip clusterfuck.

pretty much, gen 3 was kind of whatever, late DP block up into the lv.X era was great. BW/EX 2.0 wasn't that bad but the game is definitely shallower since then than it was before.

GX era has given us some broke ass shit, but I think we're moving back towards a more interesting meta after ROS/AOR rotate.

Having just played Base Set vidyas, I well know the pain of facing any part of haymaker.

Speaking of tournament winning decks, I decided to look up current ones, to get a feel for the meta, and the top deck on the site has only 10 pokemon (4 unique) and only 7 energy. The next one down doesn't even contain energies anymore and frankly i can't figure out how it's supposed to work. Do you just stall til they run out of cards? The tried and true "4 of basic, 3 of stage 1, 2 of stage 2 for each family, 22-27 energy based on needs" formula definitely no longer applies.

Also everything is superbroken basics. It looks like nobody uses normal evolution anymore, they might as well have written it out of the game. Which is sad because I really liked that unique aspect to the pokemon TCG. The only thing that did anything close was digimon's which was weird and awful.

Kinda feels like they fixed haymaker by just making everything into even worse haymaker.

The Wailord deck was a special case. As you say, it was designed to stall out the opponent's deck, since if you start your turn unable to draw a card from your deck, you lose. It's a win condition that a lot of newer players fall for and hate, but it's in the rules.
In general, competitive TCG is far more focused on trainer cards than on having a lot of Pokémon and Energy. There are a lot of reasons, but the gist of it is that there's no point waiting to draw a Pokémon randomly if you can instead guarantee getting a trainer card, which lets you get another trainer card, which lets you choose which Pokémon you want.
There's no point having twenty Pokémon in your deck if your opponent only needs to KO 3-4 to win.

Also, the meta has changed a bit in the two years since the link you posted was written. Sun & Moon is more evolution focused than back then. You've also completely skipped over night march, Greninja's relevant period etc.

Fair. I'm just used to a meta where trainer card chains don't really exist and it was important to make sure you always had things in your bench.

EXs counting as two prize cards also certainly thin things out a bit too. Gone are the days of sacrificing chump blockers to buy time to evolve a sweeper on your bench or draw that right card.

The card would be pretty inoffensive if Vileplume didn't exist. Turn 1 item lock should in no world be allowed. Toad at least gave you a turn to do things. The opening coinflip should not be as important as it is right now.

why max elixir with just 8 basic energy? Your odds of hitting are not very good. I won't use max elixir in a deck with less than ten, preferably more. On top of that, your attackers aren't even basics so now you have to first hit an elixir, then evolve. Either that or put the energy somewhere you don't really want it to be yet.

I would remove all four in favour of one Flare Grunt and three regular Hammers - in combination with Crunch & night forme's ability, you can focus on slowing the opponent down instead of speeding yourself up.

Part of me really wants to find a way to run Max Elixir, Mega Turbo, and Aqua Patch in Blastoise.

It can't be good, but I must go fast.

the prices will gradually fall on most cards from that set over time. Lele will remain over 20 packs but the fact that the set has so many blingfag essentials as well as the new core consistency card means people will buy TONS of packs from this set which will gradually devalue basically everything but the SR cards.

Every normal rarity GX in this set except Lele, Sylveon, Drampa and maybe Lycanrock will end up being a one pack card. Good uncommon trainers are already a pack for a playset. Garbodor already fell to about 2 packs value and will continue falling since even though the demand is very high, it's not that rare of a card. It'll probably stabilize at 1 pack or so.

I got two (2) holo Politoed in the elite box I bought, can I make it work?

I've never bought any pokemon cards or played the game so I need your expertise /tcg/

I willingly gave my money to a carnie to participate in a shooting gallery scam because why not. Because no prizes interested me I just picked a pack of pokemon cards, who knows I might get lucky. Among these cards was this.

My questions are:

Market, carnie packs are usually fake. Opened cards in bundles or mystery boxes usually have nothing good in or are fake so don't get those. Only get official merchandise to get real cards if you care enough.

Misprints are pretty rare but they're usually just misaligned text, a typing error or miscuts

3) The rise of Garbodor punished item eavy decks. The fact that M- Mewtwo is weak to it almost killed it. I see it only in expanded now. Garb also push back Vileplume based decks that need a lot of items to set up, giving water decks time to breathe. Volcanion, QuadLapras are still a thing and Sylveon and Tapu-Koko are new GX based decks.

Lillie as a one-of in any deck that isn't trying to open with some other specific supporter (eg Fan Club or Wally are relevant again). You can't afford to just Sycamore entire hands away anymore - not with Garb around.
Nest Ball is very important to occasional decks, and will only grow more so after rotation.
From GUR, the stadia are each worth picking up a playset of. Choice Band and Field Blower like anon said. Aqua Patch is a must 4-of in so many Water Decks.

99% of decks only run 2 right now anyways. Only Megaray, Megagarde STS, Vespiquen, Lurantis/Vileplume and some Deciduplume lists run 3 or 4.

basically, I work on a big rotating conveyor belt machine I won't go into a crazy amount of detail of, but every. fucking. day. there's about 8000 pokemon cards blown all over the ground and the place its awful. the shitty packaging they send them out in breaks apart at the edge and they just rotate around the building snowfalling pokemon cards into everything. almost tripped and broke my ass on a fucking fighting energy baka.

also once found a loose unsealed envelope full of holographics, must have been a stack of at least 120 of em. I never keep stuff that falls out of packages though (it's not my property lol) so I just sent it to rewrap/inspection and moved on.

tl;dr: if you're gonna mail cards, for the love of fucking GOD please PLEASE do not shove a shit ton of them into a cardboard box. all that empty space + card board's integrity = cardsplosion. wrap it up tightly in a decent sealed pouch with a strong label, not too thin and without the barcode obscured and you'll have about a 99.99%+ success rate with sending cards.

I'd use this list. Super Scoop Up is being reprinted and Acerola will replace AZ since it's better for this deck. I wouldn't really bother running Koko until the next set drops because of how much better it will get, but you should buy the cards up now while they're cheap.

Choice bands are also good, if you use them use a Kukui as well so you can hit 180 verses GX/EX, I like FFBs for the extra durability they give you against OHKO focused decks though, especially in the lategame against trash man since this deck is item heavy. The important thing is to get an attachment and an elixir on turn 1 so you can play a Koko and attack turn 2.

Some other shit I've seen in these decks is electrode (a lot of investment for something that will be trashed by an enhanced hammer), ampharos AOR (teched in for the lightningrod attack, i think its shit) and raikou bkt (it's nice to have a one prize attacker for a 7 prize game, but without electrode it takes forever to come online)

bundles are mostly honeypots. Guardians will be the best set for awhile so just keep dropping tokens on it until you have 4 tradelocked lele.

bundles stay in the store long enough for you to farm up coins for a couple of them before they leave.
