While the river is an improvement, I like how secluded the little pond looks in the original GSC.
In every run, I always make a stop there before going for the league.
>>
So what are your favorite routes of every region, /vp/?
>>
Routes 120 and 121, Unova routes 10 and 23, Kalos Routes 15 and 16. I really like Poni Wilds and Poni Plains as well, but they're not numbered routes so they may or may not count.

>>
>>32500890
Right? Holy shit. So much to do, so much to explore. It really captured the coziness of Johto with the mons and music on top of that top-tier map design. I would kill for another Sevii Islands.

>TFW we didn't get it in ORAS so we'll probably never get it though
>>
>>32500914
Why the fuck would they have been included in oras when there was already cut content? That's retarded thinking anon. Also RBG remakes are inevitable so chill the fuck out.

Seriously why tf would we have got it in ORAS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTbahCmBHr8

Same feeling, but really encompasses that relaxed, snazzy Sinnoh atmosphere perfectly.
>>
>>32500970
The alternation in the instruments make it a little laid back for me but you're right, it has great pacing especially if you play that part for long enough to hear both versions.
>>
>>32495839
Best route in Hoenn, by fucking far. Easily one of the only ones that is a pure delight to explore for me

>>32495946
Comfy as fuck, and it's poetic how you reach the bottom of the mountain and you're back home!

>>32496040
This is a real normie filter. Anybody who complains about this route is missing the point completely. One of the few times the games TRULY push you to your limits, in a harsh and lonely enviornment. You go through Mt. Coronet, scale down a mountain, and then push through a fucking blizzard. Your Pokémons health is chipping away by the second, and there's a few little landmarks of interest too. Your Eevee may not have evolved at this point, so stumbling into that big blue rock could be a great moment.

The sense of relief you feel when you make it to Snowpoint (If you make it!) is huge, and that is a good sign that the game has just tested you with some REAL adventure, and you pulled through.

I remember playing through it at nighttime when I was much younger, and it was a very magical stand-out moment.

>>32496207
The first half of Kalos is literally 11/10, all the routes are stunning.

Sadly the awkward chibi artstyle, and the patchwork-feel of the second half of the region, have really tainted Kalos as a whole.

>>32500520
Unova has a lot of good locations. The desert, Chargestone, Twist Mountain, Village Bridge, practically every route between towns.

Even some of the towns are fantastic and offer exploration. Castelia (along with the sewers) has a lot of hidden areas. Virbank is also really comfy.

>>32500403
Route 10 was one of the few toned-down/boring routes, but I think they wanted to focus mostly on the music and melancholy feeling of your adventure coming to its end.

>>32500537
I unironically like it. It felt like a step into a larger, prettier world. Not supposed to be a proper route.

>>32500873

The Ruins Of Alph (2).jpg
524KB, 827x786px
I like the Ruins of Alph, and everything that surrounds them

>Union Cave entrance
>small cave,
>comfy to explore,
>found TWO shinies there,
>has secret Lapras
>south exit leads to Kurt and his Apricorn Balls

>The eastern entrance
>where I first saw a Legendary Pokémon in Gold (Suicune),
>has the magnet train tracks,
>long winding route is where the Johto adventure really feels like it begins, now that you're out of your neighborhood

>northern entrance
>Has day-of-the-week character
>And the Sudowudo that when overcome leads to Ecruteak/Goldenrod

And then the ruins themselves need no explanation. Creepy as fuck, tons of hidden shit to figure out and find, and even a DLC adventure starting there.

Everything about that corner of Johto screams comfy rural adventure and intrigue. I enjoy exploring every time I play.

Everything after that feels like a more traditional adventure, a blend of Kanto/Hoenn/Sinnoh elements. And that's fine, but it's that earlier corner of Johto that makes the region special to me.
>>
>>32501118
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Iem9iN1Ds8

Fucking hell man, it's like they put a creepypasta in the game. I love it when they do shit like that, it's like in R/S/E when they made the playground rumors of "IF YOU RUN AROUND THIS AREA WITH THESE TWO POKEMON IN THESE SPECIFIC PARTS OF YOUR PARTY THEN A LEGENDARY POPS OUT!!!" a reality. I wish they did more neat stuff like that and the friday Lapras. Nowadays it's all so damn predictable and linear.
>>
>>32501141
Yeah, recent Pokémon games have railroaded things too much.

Gen 5 still had a lot of mystery though.

>Castelia Desert and the ruins which you are never actually told to explore
>The Abyssal Ruins in B2W2
>That Zoroark in Losthorn
>Finding Landorus
>And Cobalion in that cave
>And the hidden Castelia areas from the Sewers
>The B2W2 Regi Puzzles (everyone forgets B2W2 had its own Regi puzzles!)

Plenty of hidden areas and mystery and secrets to figure out and find.

Gen 6 is when Game Freak started to give up and, to put it nicely, focus on other things in the games.

I miss when there was more mystery and exploration in Pokémon.

Route 110
Perfectly fits the middle of any adventure
>>
>>32501153
Totally. The continued playability of games just fucking plummeted at gen 6. Now there's barely anything left to explore in Sun and Moon, we have a grand total of a single area and the place that connects to it that you wouldn't find during normal gameplay, and all it is is a shitty bay with nothing in it.
>>
>>32501175
There was also the desert area in S/M, but it was shit.

S/M were a step forward in a lot of places, but in terms of exploration and adventure, they took three steps back from X/Y, which were three steps back from B2/W2
>>
Kalos Route 13. With the Kalos Route 8 theme playing, braving the sandstorms and the burrowing Pokémon made me feel like a heroic badass pushing on despite difficult odds.

But the thought of doing all those water routes is always off-putting to me, especially if this "classic" music is making my ears bleed:

Aside from that if you have shit taste that's another story, Hoenn water routes are the best routes by far. Besides I was talking about Emerald:

I really love route 47. It's not just the music, but the whole sense of wonder. Think about it
>new area in old place, showing how there's always something to discover even if you think you've seen everything
>hidden fertile valleys inland, hinting there's more landmass, probably even a new region you can stumble upon by walking like with Kanto
>waterfall cliffs, showing the edge of the region, as the southern horizon makes you wonder just how far of a Surf Hoenn could be
>the Embedded Tower also adds to your curiosity. If the legendary pokemon of Hoenn have their own resting place in the region, really, just how close could you get to it if you simply Surfed past that seemingly endless horizon
It's just one of the themes that makes me love HGSS. There's this whole sense of one world, and it's all connected! Not like how isolated Unova, Kalos, and Alola are. You can actually see the influence Kanto and Johto have on each other, you can visit Kanto, you can visit the Sinjoh Ruins, you can meet Steven Stone, you can catch the Latis, you can see Giovanni in the past, you can trade with so many npcs and Lt Surge even gives you a French (English in Japanese versions) Pikachu, showing that there's so much more to this world than just the 48 routes you've explored in this one journey. What's stopping you from visiting Kanto? What's stopping you from going further? What's stopping you from exploring the world? If it weren't a video game, the answer would be nothing. The world is yours to see and experience, and HGSS makes a wonderful job of telling you that. I can't help but feel that Hoenn is just around the corner, that the world is just around that corner. That the pokemon world has so many opportunities and expansive regions just waiting to be explored. That our world is just waiting for us to experience it. A neverending expanse: the ocean, the land, the sky. That's why I love route 47.

>>32501855
It's because they have the routes of R/S/E, but are ugly as fuck so people tend to use the R/S/E versions in these threads instead.
>>
>>32501855
What >>32501873 said, I love the Hoenn routes for their RSE incarnations. The only route that really works well in ORAS is Route 120, and that's just because it looks gorgeous at night when you walk over the bridge and see the stars.
>>
>>32501855
Not they don't.

There's a few stand-out routes which are admittedly among the best in the franchise, such as the one in the OP.

But that's cherrypicking the good Hoenn routes, the vast majority of that region is utter fucking trash.

Also OR/AS gets hate because;

>A) Did not include gameplay improvements, nor additional content from Emerald
>B) Did not update the layout of routes to cater to the jump from 3D, making it look clunky and awkward

This meant that not only were Pokémon fans disappointed by the mediocre games and their lack of content, but it didn't even meet the expectations of Pokémon fans that actually really like Hoenn.

>>
>>32501916
Please point out which you believe are trash and why.
>>
>>32501932
For starters, the 7 water routes that are staples together, three of which are conjoined by strong water currents, and half of which are twice as long because of the dive areas.

Nobody in their right mind could defend that, but earlier in the thread someone unironically said they were the best routes in the game, so arguing this shit is moot.
>>
>>32501945
I enjoy them, personally, there's a lot of places to explore on them. I do think they probably shouldn't have been mandatory, though.
>>
>>32501956
Not all of them were mandatory to be fair.

The strong current routes could be left until post game.

I also like the ideas that went into the routes;

>Hidden Regi ruins underwater
>Dive spots for more exploration
>yin/yang, Land/Sea themes to explain the region layout

The problem is that all of this water was clumped together, and there is almost NOTHING there.

Almost no islands, almost all of the encounters are just Tentacool/Wingull. It just ends up being a slog of surfing for the last 1/3rd of the game while you try to wrap up the story threads as fast as possible so that you can get back to the actual land again.

If there was more interesting landmarks, and a better balance of water areas, and Pokémon variety, it would have been better.

OR/AS did add Sea Mauville to one of the water routes which was one of the few things I loved about OR/AS, but I still found the game a slog
>>
>>32501997
>OR/AS did add Sea Mauville to one of the water routes
"Sea Mauville" is a reskinned Abandoned Ship, which was in RSE as well. Personally I think Sea Mauville is one of the few improved areas in ORAS due to how unique it is and all the hidden lore in the different rooms if you check the bookshelves, but it was around in the originals, just fluffed differently.
I agree with you that the lack of variety is the worst part of Hoenn's water routes. With how many Water-types there are in the game they really could have spread things out better.

To this day Ruins of Alph are my favorite location in any Pokémon game. I'm a sucker for creepy locations. I loved Pokemon Tower in RBY and the Old Chateau in DPP, but those areas felt more explained and integrated into the game's plot. That was my biggest gripe with the abandoned supermarket in SM, the fact the game railroads you through it. I like it when the creepy areas feel off to the side and truly neglected.

The Ruins of Alph were just a total mystery to me as a kid, and apart from catching Smeargle and Xatu nearby their purpose wasn't really clear.

I remember finding that area as a kid

My mind was blown. I remember the girls give you an item, and tell you to piss off and keep the area a secret.

In HG/SS, the first two girls are a double battle too, making it even more exciting.

Check it out. This seemingly insignicant route in Emerald actually has two secret areas to find by surfing. One to throw you off, one that's the actual secret area. That little nestled away patch of grass is the only place in the game you can find Jigglypuff.

>>32501104

There are a lot of insane, weird connections in these games. If you walk through walls on ever grande city from one end of the outside of Victory Road to the next, you'll actually wind up on the other side of victory road. It's amazing how much effort they put into keeping things connected that nobody will ever reach.

Kalos. Also less optional areas in the main game.
The post game area were much better than the main game ones, which were mostly standard grassy routes with a straight path to the end.

>>
>>32507787

BW1 and it's route was a straight A to B game. Routes were designed to have a main path to the end with grass chunks between them. Kalos also had many, but I remember there being more routes mixed up than in Unova. The only routes I remember being more mixed up were the routes before and after Mistralton.

I also mean mainly the main game.

>>32507813
Just about every route in Unova has some hidden area within it or some extra exploration that you don't see during the main story. For example, the rest of wellspring cave, route 17 off the coast of route 1, Mistralton Cave, Pinwheel Forest's outer area where Sawk and Throh can be found and Virizion's area, Lostlorn forest, Moor of Icirrus and so on and so forth. Unova is filled with areas like this.

Kalos on the other hand is exactly as you decribed, A to B. Just a main path with grass chuncks between them.
Only a handful of routes in the game actually diverge into new and unexplored areas and often they just lead to a dead end with an item. Basically the entire game is designed more like a tour rather than an adventure.

>I also mean mainly the main game.
Yes?
I think the only area that's blocked of completely during the main game is the remainder of the ruins where Volcarona is and challenger's cave.

>>32507773
You're crazy then. There are like a dozen side areas you're supposed to go off and explore.

People complaining about the Gen 5 games being streamlined clearly didn't even TRY to explore.

This has not been the case in any game since. Alola for example only has two side areas you can explore. TWO. Both of which are locked off until you've effectively cleared out the entire Island. Kalos wasn't much better.
>>
>>32507912
Reminder that you can explore that fuckhuge desert and a few rooms of the castle ruins in Unova like 5 badges before you're "supposed to".

Compared to Alola's shitty Lost Forest desert that was locked off until you cleared the island.

Unova had TONS of areas that were optional exploration, if you were sticking to the main pathways, then you fucked up your own experience of the game.

Why the fuck would you just travel in that circle pathway just because that's where all the main routes are. Don't people TRY to explore?
