See, I think those things are called Pussy. Seeing as they live in the ocean, they might have that distinct smell that Pussies are rumored to have. Of course, I wouldn't know myself, as I am busy spending precious time on a Korean puppet show site with its own dedicated section on being the next Micheal Vick.

A blatant mistake by the animators, according to Masuda.
Meaning non-cannon.
But Indian Elephants are cannon, since they are referred to in Moon.

The anime was originally supposed to take place on a futuristic Earth. According to two supplementary books made by Takeshi Shudo, Pokémon popped up on Earth one day. They eventually began replacing animals however some animals still survived. This explains early episodes where real-world countries exist and animals are shown. The original plot for the third film was even going to be about what happened to real-world animals according to Word of God.
tl;dr this Pokemon is known as "Early Installment Weirdness", and it is one that is featured in many shows, though probably most prominently in Pokemon.

Source mentioned literally in the post you replied to.

Yeah but I'm not going to learn Japanese and buy two books just so I can believe some claim from a random dude on 4chan.
I meant a source that is actually accessible online.
