Well, since you all seem to be hyped to return to the original region of the Pokemon games, I guess I can tell you that the next pair of Pokemon games, Kanto Haha & Kanto XD will be released November this year. If you have any questions regarding these upcoming games I'd be glad to answer them.

I don't really understand what you mean with "handholding" and "dumbed down" but we do our best so that new players can easily learn how to play the games. There will be more NPCs like the grumpy tutorial man in Viridian City and their tutorials are now turned into cinematic cutscenes to make the game more immersive. The new Pokedex will have an add-on called "Battle Helper" that shows you the effectiveness of your moves even if you haven't seen the opposing Pokemon before, and it will ask you for a confirmation if you're about to use a not very effective move. For example, if you're trying to use Ember against a Squirtle, the game will ask "Are you sure you want to use this move? It's not very effective!" before executing the move. The Battle Helper cannot be turned off so that new players wouldn't accidentally miss it.
