The massive variety of design is pretty much because gamefreak thought "We can either stick to a design philosophy and make people bored because our 'mons will start to look samey, or we can just change things up as we see fit and keep things interesting."

There's also the whole thing where a lot of artists work on a lot of 'mons.

One column of these are Pokemon. The others aren't. Can you tell which? I'll give you a hint: it's the ones that don't have a bunch of shitty detail and colors thrown in where it's not necessary. Even the UBs follow this. All of them only have 3 colors at most every part of their design are there to convey what its concept is.

They shouldn't be drawn in a realistic art style is the point everyone is trying to make. If it's a Fakémon, it should be drawn in a similar art style to Pokémon. Otherwise it's just a random monster that is only a Fakémon because you say it is. No one would look at that and think Pokémon, they'd think something more like Evolve, Morrowind, or Dark Souls.

Meh, I can actually see it as one of the few, even by gen 1 standard, designs with 'realistic' proportions but it's literally just a baby emu with lava theme tacked on and only the eggshell hat distinguishes it, also as a starter it overlaps a lot with Torchic.
Add more subtle elements to make it a more organic design rather than the "real life animal/object+concept/element" trap that most designers fall into, don't be afraid to give it characteristics of other creatures, pokemon are monsters first, not animals.
Also I'd change the body proportions and make his head bigger and rounder, and give him a little more personality.

I see no issue with the digi-scyther and the digi-slowking lookk literally just like an alternate version of slowking where the shell is larger than him.

What I'm saying is that I personally like both pokemon and digimon that look kaiju-ish because that's the sort of designs I prefer over the simplistic kid-friendly designs.

Even as a kid, I tried to catch the most "cool" 'mons in Emerald, regardless of stats or typings I tried to catch the most monster-like pokemon.

Last thing, they're really not that spooky when you look at them. The final form looks less intimidating than mewtwo in my opinion. He looks like some sort of king pokemon that would wake the fuck up to hyperbeam darkrai into submission.

The design is better than the first one, though I did a design to try fix some of the problems that yours had.

The helmet doesn't really look too natural and appears to be sticked on. Generally, most pokemon design have more natural side going on. You could try making it blend within the body to make it more natural. The proportions seem to be tad too realistic for an first stage, the proportions could be more exaggerated and cartoony.

The base stage is entirely hiding within an extra skin layer while the other stages are more out in the open. I suppose the ability could still fit given how other Overcoat users have a rather vague application of it, but it's not the worst ability to lose since Shed Skin is the better of the two anyway. Changing the text is the easiest part though, so nothing's carved in stone.

Ultra Beasts cannot be used an an excuse to draw Pokemon designs that go way beyond the usual simplicity of most Pokemon designs. UBs may be Pokemon, but the reason they're different is justified from their origin, and not that GameFreak has dropped all boundaries of what's now a normal Pokemon design.

So if you want to design something more complex or unnatural, then call it an Ultra Beast and you'll be fine. Pokemon designs are still meant to be fairly simple and cartoonish, look no further than the other Pokemon introduced in Alola.

From your perspective, if the base stage were to evolve directly into the last stage, would you find that to be too sudden or a reasonable leap? I only make three stage lines when each stage represents something within the chosen theme, or I need to make the jump from the base to the final stage less drastic so that people don't end up with something completely unexpected, since unnecessary middle stages are one sure-fire way of producing "it just gets bigger" lines.
