Post fun facts.

The cartridge of Pokemon Yellow does not include the word "Yellow" on it.
>>
In Inverse Battles, Freeze-Dry affected by Normalize and then Ion Deluge will hit Water-type Pokémon super effectively.
>>
Vaporeon can't learn Mist in Yellow unless it reaches Level 42 while it's in the Daycare. This is because it is programmed to learn both Haze and Mist at Level 42, but a bug in Gen I prevents Pokémon from learning two level-up moves from a single level.

>>
Fun fact: Charizard's shiny sprite changed in gen3 in order to appeal to retarded kids.
>>
The original idea for shiny Pokemon in gen 2 came about due to the hex code of the color palettes changed when adding new Pokemon resulting in Pokemon at index 1 getting color swapped to the Pokemon in index 2.

Missingno is not a deleted Pokemon but is a simple error handler designed to prevent the game messing up but due to the buggy programming messing with missingno always players to alter some of the games code.

New was added last minute without approval or testing and almost caused the entire green and red games to get canned.
>>
>>32460503
It's always been black with red wings in official artwork.
>>
Rock Throw only had 65% accuracy in Gen I.

Archeops's Pokédex number matches its base stat total.

Present's damage calculation is really bugged in Gold and Silver. Among other things, it uses the index number of the target's secondary type instead of its Defense stat.
>>
Waterfall was in Gen 1
>>
Girafarig, Ho-Oh and Alomomola are the same if you spell them backwards

Link battling was going to be left out of the original Pokemon games, and only have trading available. Link battles were added last minute.
>>
If a Pokemon were to be all 18 types simultaneously, it would only be weak 2x to Rock
>>

Starting with XY a Farfetch'd holding a Stick and using a move with increased critical hit rate will always do a critical hit.

Rotom is based on Pulseman, a game made by Game Freak for SEGA Genesis.

Due to an oversight Nidorina and Nidoqueen were programmed in the Undiscovered Egg Group in Gold and Silver, they kept them there because of the same reason Jigglypuff is still on SSB.

Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2 have shoddy translations. Not only do both games use Japanese Blue's information for English Blue (says you can catch Jynx in Seafoam, for example), but they can be made to recognize an English Green.

They come close but they either change parts of them like greninjas tongue, webbing, and stomach, are removed like mewtwos, or are no longer obtainable in the color like zards.

Admittedly some like gray lucario and white greninja i wish were alt colors I could get in game.

Then what the fuck was the point in calling MewTWO as such? Or was Mew just planned to first appear in the sequels that they already knew they were going to do?

Reruns of Pokemon in Japan during the original series would usually be followed by a program called "Pokemon de English", which used scenes and voice actors from the western dub to help the younger viewers learn English.

Do Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire not count?

Technically Ruby and Sapphire are both colors...
>>
>>32460654

Yep. On top of it being a learnable move (at least by Seaking I seem to remember), you could port it back from GSC via the Time Machine.

The attack sprite sequence is the "dig" sequence (Pokémon moves down out of frame), the "Water Pump" sequence (spouts of water going upward on the enemy) and three "Tackle" sequence hit bubbles appearing on the enemy Pokémon.

For some reason, Giovanni's Rhydon is replaced by another Rhyhorn in FireRed and LeafGreen.

>>
In Gen II, the battle hall was supposed to be a place you could battle people you link your game with. They would have used the team they had last fought there with, and if you wanted to have an updated team to battle you'd just connect again.

This worked similarly to how connecting, visiting, and battling friends in their Secret Bases worked in Gen III. If you didn't connect to anyone, you fought HAL, with the final evolved forms of the Gen II starters. However, due to generally few people having link cables when the games came out, this feature was largely unused.
>>
>>32465247
Yes, it was available only to Seaking and Goldeen, via level up. It was their signature move.
>>
>>32465451
Is the Seaking line the only line to have had a signature move get so widely distributed?
>>
Here's a fun fact and a question. In Gen II, when you fight your rival for the first time and they tell you their name, they say "My name is ???." This doesn't mean their name is actually "???" or unknown. It was intended to mean you don't understand or hear what they say, and when you return to Elm's lab and talk to the police officer, that's where you get to name your rival whatever you want, like in Gen 1 when you are introduced to Blue.

Who else here always thought "???" actually was the answer for that prompt, and so always named the rival "???" at that point? I only recently realized that no, retard, that's the "what's this character's name" prompt.
>>
>>32465461
I think so. I know that others like Sceptile and Blaziken eventually had their signatures spread out, but nothing else had its signature turned into something so widely available as an HM move.

>>32465480
HGSS handled that scene so much better, having the rival drop his trainer card so that your character conveniently "sees" his name. Much less confusing for people who didn't get the whole ??? thing back in the day.

I still tend to do that to this day. I kind of like the version where the rival is just an evil mysterious antisocial asshole who we meet like ten times and who via battling with us, Lance, Team Rocket, and the gym leaders learns to love his Pokémon and learns what it is to be a trainer. I like his lack of backstory in GSC because to me the simplicity works.

And the weird thing is I also like the way it is in HGSS, but for the opposite reason. I think the way they did it in GSC wouldn't have worked in HGSS because that's a much different-feeling game. Weird shit.

> Fun Fact: It is possible to, via altering null item and Pokémon values in a glitched (but accessible without hacking) menu, warp yourself to the Pokémon Hall of Fame in Pokémon Yellow, completing the game in 0:00. The first gen of Pokémon is notoriously broken for runners.

I don't think there are any more; I'm fairly sure the pirouette and tripping ones were discovered when the SM demo was released, so if there are any more, they most likely would have been found by now.

More trivia:

In Red and Blue, Blaine will sometimes use a Super Potion on his Pokémon when they are already at full health, completely wasting his turn.

You can enter the Safari Zone in Yellow with less than ₱500, but you only receive a number of Safari Balls proportional to how much money you have. If you have no money at all, the man at the entrance prevents you from getting inside; repeated attempts to enter result in him getting increasingly angrier, until he eventually gives up and lets the player in with a single Safari Ball. This was presumably added to prevent the player from being unable to obtain the Volcano Badge if they somehow didn't have enough money to enter the Safari Zone and get Surf.

Although the DexNav allows for Pokémon to be encountered that know Egg moves, this feature actually debuted in Emerald; outbreaks of Seedot and Nuzleaf would occasionally appear on certain routes, and all of them would know Leech Seed, which the Seedot family can only learn as an Egg move.

The music that plays in Ecruteak and Cianwood City originates from a track in Pokémon Pinball.

>According to interviews with Ken Sugimori in Nintendo Dream, Hydreigon and its evolutionary family were originally intended to be cyborg dragons with aspects of tanks. The Pokémon were scrapped until late in development, when they were revived and remade to be based on Yamata no Orochi. The tank tread-like markings on Hydreigon's body are a remnant of this design. Although Yamata no Orochi typically has eight heads in mythology, Hydreigon was designed with fewer heads to appear less confusing..

Attempting to evolve a Pokémon into a non-Gen 1 Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen before obtaining the National Dex will automatically cancel the evolution, displaying the message "...?". Since only Gen 1 Pokémon are available before the National Dex is received and trade-evolution items are not available either, this can only be seen if a Golbat or Chansey is levelled up with 220 happiness.

Sudowoodo can learn Calm Mind, though it cannot make much use of it due to its 30 Special Attack and the fact that it only learns 5 special attacks in total.

In Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, Riolu and Lucario essentially have no Abilities because of the fact that these games let Pokémon have both of their Abilities at once; Steadfast requires them to flinch before they get a speed boost, whereas Inner Focus prevents them from flinching altogether.

Blizzard has been nerfed in almost every way possible since the Japanese Red and Green Versions. It was initially a 120 power attack with 90% accuracy, 5 PP and a 30% chance to freeze; it is now a 110 power attack with 70% accuracy, 5 PP and a 10% chance to freeze.

Okay, faggot. Here's your (you).
a). I was like 7 when I played that game the first time. I'm sorry I didn't wait to experience the game in my thirties like you did, anon, or that I wasn't born a literal genius capable of understanding the actual intent for this scene. I'm sorry I didn't understand the intricacies of game design and translation errors and misconveyance of purpose in two-second scenes in the game that I'd never played before then.

b). I answered the fucking question the policeman asked me as best I could with the information I had. My reading comprehension is fine, it was in fact the PUZZLE that was retarded if you recall. You can ask any fucking seven year old on the planet "if this guy says 'my name is ???', and this guy asks 'what's that guys name?', what do you tell them?", that seven year old will reply "I'd tell them his name is ??? regardless of how bizarre that is in a real-world setting because that's how it was explained to me".

c). I wasn't fucking incorrect given what the game was telling me, because the rival explicitly says "My name is ???" And the policeman asks "What was the guy's name? He told you what it is!" Again, it was the PUZZLE that was misleading, and the way they changed it in the remake to remove all confusion proves that Game Freak thought so too.

And d). Through z)., suck a fat one.

>Fun fact; the anon I'm replying to is a fat faggot whose apparently crippling intellect makes it impossible for him to function in normal society.

Until Sun and Moon, the same applied for Dodrio. Dodrio is still catchable in more games than Doduo, as Dodrio is a Shadow Pokémon in GoD.
>>
>>32472230

>i was 8 when i played that game
Okay, older than me. Go on.

>i was playing a translated as bed as fuck emulated version that was a pain in the eye.
So, hold on. 1). When you were 8, in presumably the early 2000s, you were already savvy with emulators? I played on an official cartridge on a gameboy. There's no telling how valid your emulation was especially since you yourself admit it was poorly translated.

Also 2). Who the fuck are you to shit on my reading comprehension when you throw phrases like "a translated as bed as fuck" and "a pain in the eye" at me? There's an idiom in English that goes "the pot calling the kettle black".

And 3). You admit that you played your version in a different language? The version you played might not have translated properly, making it easier for you than the others in this thread to get it. If it were something like "my name is unknown" or "you don't know my name", I think I would have gotten it. The fact the specific phrase is "my name is ???" made it confusing.

>Not only that but it wasn't even in my first language (wich isn't english at all).
So you're comparing your experience to mine despite them being completely different. Got it. Go on.

>Despite of that i had no problem to connect the dots since the same happened in the previous game as well with Blue!
No, the same thing absolutely did not happen with Blue. With Blue, before you got the prompt, the first time you meet him, Oak doesn't go "and here's my nephew, ???." and then ask you "What's his name?" after you deliver his parcel.

>Fun fact! Did you know the anon trying to put me down for English comprehension isn't a native speaker, played on a potentially inaccurate emulation of the game, and had a poor translation into a non-English language, yet still believes there's no difference between his experience and my experience with the confusing beginning part. Also, he has a distinct crotch stink and needs to wash better.
>>
>>32472268
>Hm, they changed this thing I had no trouble with.
>I didn't have any trouble with it...
>So why did they change it?

>Could it be because I played a version in a different language and may have had a different experience?
>Could it be because it was somewhat slightly ambiguous in this fantasy world with electric rats and fantastical creatures for this mysterious character's name to be given to the player as "???", maybe?
>Could it be because, unlike the previous game in the series, there wasn't both an analogue character in the anime and a menu of preset names you could select from for this character?
>Could it be because the way they previously handled it wasn't crystal clear, and the new way they do it is moreso?
>Could it be because, despite myself not having an issue with it, which is fine, it may have actually been confusing to kids younger than me, which is also okay?

>Nah.
>They changed it because the kids are retards.
>Retarded kids. That's the reason.
>Unlike myself!
>I took the SAT at age negative two and I got into Harvard English School the very next day.

>When you were 8, in presumably the early 2000s, you were already savvy with emulators?

Yes, my brother dowloaded it for me and i was able to run an emulator. It's not that difficult, you know?

Ok, english is not my first language and i was writing so quick i had a couple of typos. Despite of that i'm able to speak four different languages, two of them at that age.

>Not only that but it wasn't even in my first language (wich isn't english at all).
>So you're comparing your experience to mine despite them being completely different. Got it. Go on.

I'm not comparing experiences, i'm just saying that 3 freaking question marks can't be considered a name and are used to mean mystery! A thing that was already clear in my mind at that age.

>had a poor translation into a non-English language

Read carefully, i didn't say it was badly translated into a non-English language. It was translated in a very poor English from the Japanese cartridge. Since it wasn't my fist language and was poorly translated it actually raised the difficulty not the opposite.

>Also, he has a distinct crotch stink and needs to wash better.

In Japanese, the two child characters from the Victini movies are named after light and dark to match the light and dark theme of the movies. Aude or オード can be translated to aether or upper world, heaven, light, while Shade or セード means shade, shadows, dark. Their names are not exact opposites because they wanted to kanji to match, but the meanings are there.

The dub didn't get it and just gave them two random names that sound the same.
>>
>>32472394
>it's useless to waste more time on you

Cool, see you later retard. I was fine posting fun facts in a wholesome, good thread until you had to come in and call me and others here a dumbass for not getting something that we all agreed was confusing.

Lemme sum up for everyone. I post a relatable childhood experience from when I was new to the game, and a few people go "haha yeah I remember doing that too!". This guy shows up and in broken English remarks that he wasn't confused at all by it and that anyone who was must be retarded, narrating his fake laughs and everything. "Question marks aren't a name!" He shrieks in uproarious laughter, tears in his eyes, about a character in a game where ten-year-olds travel the world with magical animals with elemental powers who fight each other.

I then, like an autist, respond, taking the bait. I was tilted, sue me. But in his response to me, it becomes clear that he
>Had a very different set of situations than mine
>Played on a Japanese game translated poorly into English
>Doesn't speak English as a first language
>Played on an emulation, which, again, we have no idea if it was an official translation or not

But despite all this he can't see a single reason that we, people who have vastly different experiences with this game than him, may have been confused where he was not.

Please keep being a multilingual genius. Just do it elsewhere. Ideally away from people.

(I'm serious about the crotchstink. I can prescribe you stuff if you want. I used to be 14, I know how hard your body changing can be)
>>
>>32472394
>it actually raised the difficulty not the opposite.

Normally that's probably true but in this instance, unless you can provide the exact script from that part of the same translation you played, it's entirely possible that between the differences in the translations and your lack of English comprehension at the time compared to a native speaker that either: the translation you saw was somehow better worded in that scene than the official one, the grammer and vocabulary your brain primarily works in from your native language may have matched closely enough to coincidentally fill in the gaps despite it reading a bit strangely, or some other set of circumstances specific to your experience allowing for one of those situations where mistakes cancel out and you still arrive at the correct answer anyways where as most players didn't get the hint. And I'm saying this as someone who did get it right as a native English speaker playing an official cartridge. In my case specifically I did actually name the kid but not because I got the hint but because I forgot what he said his name was and panicked and put in a random name because I didn't want the cop to give me any trouble for happening to meet a thief, I just wanted to continue on my adventure and I thought next time that bit of the plot came up the kid would correct the officer and everything would proceed from there. You have not provided enough information to prove your situation is not just an outlier due to unique circumstances while it is generally accepted by the majority of people who played that part in English that it's confusing to those who where in the target audience when they first played the game. Every time we have a "dumb things you did as a kid playing pokemon" thread this issue comes up and 7/10 people had the same experience on their first playthrough of forever knowing their rival as ??? and clearly the game's creators agree because they changed it for the remakes.

The Gen V Pokémon Sandile in Black and White by far one of the most popular Pokémon to find shiny, likely behind only the GSC Red Gyarados. This is as a result of a bizarre glitch that made wild shiny Sandiles something like 8x more likely to appear (so still rare, but significantly less rare).

I know this because I caught one and raised it to a Krookodile in White when I played it. I was floored because the only other shiny I've ever encountered besides Gyarados was a shiny Yanma in Silver version. I faced the Elite Four with that guy.

In beta!Red-Green, Giovanni was supposed to be a little kid from Viridian City and the first gym leader. Since Giovanni's badge looks like a feather (sakaki's leafs as well because "Sakaki" is Giovani's japanese name) and Viridian's peripheries doesn't have real good variety of pokemon, he probably was a Flying type leader, but it was changed to the last gym leader and Ground type.
Other stuff hints Sabrina as the strongest gym leader in beta versions.

>>
Kirlia has the same BST as Fletchling
>>
>>32473385
That's one of the stuff
Her badge is also called "gold" (not even golden) badge in japanese and the name of her city is based on an orange-yellowith color (yamabuki) like based on gold, while the localized name comes from saffron not only based on the color but also on its great value.
The golden motif of Sabrina's city and badge and the fact that psychic type is by far the strongest type in the game (and the main and strongest legendary pokemon is also a psyhic one) really makes you think Saffron city was supposed to be locked until you beat the game and then you can challenge the bonus psychic gym leader and then try to catch the psychic type legendary pokemon.

Oh also that "Giovanni was a kid" thing comes from Sugimori(?) old notes from Red-Green beta where every gym leader is drawed (in its beta version, like "soldier Blaine") with a number.
Brock - 2
Misty - 3
Lt. Surge - 4
Erika - 5
Koga - 6
Blaine - 7

The first one (1) is the little kid, supposed to be beta!Giovanni and Sabrina is drawed too but she lacks of number as a bonus/special gym leader.

Giovanni being a flying type gym leader makes even more sense when you see newer games. Nothing could use Kinesis outside of Metronome in Red/Blue

Lance's Dragonite in RBY is beatable with any poison type at any level, provided it uses Toxic, due to the AI being coded to always use SE moves and Agility being Psychic type.

If you catch a Shadow Pokemon in Colosseum, it has a 1/8192 chance to turn shiny as it enters your party/pc

As of Gen 6, there were 8 pokemon that could never be shiny legitimately. With the inclusion of Gen 7, that number more than triples to 25.

All female starter pokemon in Gen 2 had an Attack DV of 0-1

>Prior to Generation VI, because Azurill's gender ratio does not match that of its evolved forms and its evolution is not dependent on gender, being female 75% of the time while Marill and Azumarill are female only 50% of the time, female Azurill has a 1/3 chance of evolving into a male Marill (depending on its personality value). Azurill is the only Pokémon to do this. In Generation VI, Azurill retains its gender upon evolving, despite the gender ratios still differing.

In Gen 1, Pokemon of a certain type are immune to secondary effects of moves of that same type, used against them. For example, the same mechanic that prevents Growlithe from being burned from another Pokemon using Ember on it, or Pikachu from being paralyzed from another Pokemon using Thunder on it, prevents Snorlax from being paralyzed from another Pokemon using Body Slam on it.
>>

Couldn't this be done with Eevee maxing out happiness too cause of Umbreon/Espeon?
>>
>>32479334
There is no trial captain for the Dragon Trial, though.
>>
Fun fact: in generation seven you catch catch different forms of some Kanto Pokémon known as "Alolan Forms. "
>>
>>32480368
No because FRLG don't have a day/night cycle. To evolve an Eevee in Gen 3, you have to trade it into RSE and evolve it there.
>>
>>32480452
Wow, really? That's kinda bullshit.

...Wait, RSE doesn't have a day-night cycle either?
>>
>>32480452
Oh, I never knew that. I always thought FRLG had the day/night cycle but it just didn't show in the overworld
>>
>>32480484
Nope, it doesn't. Umbreon and Espeon are unobtainable in Gen III main games. I never played the Gamecube games, but if you can trade between them, you might be able to get them from Colosseum or XD (for any sperging fags, that's not an emoticon, that's actually the name of the game.)
>>
>>32480452
>>32480484
>>32480501
I don't know about FRLG but RSE had a day/night cycle, it just wasn't visible.
So if your Eevee evolved, say, past 10 PM it would still turn into Umbreon.
>>
>>32480484
Yes it does. The overworld doesn't change colour, but time is a thing. Remember the high and low tides?

All of the Pokémon that can have Honey Gather can use Sweet Scent, which has the same effect as using a pot of Honey.

When the player battles Steven at Meteor Falls in Emerald, he makes reference to having battled alongside the player at the "Sootopolis Space Center". However, the Space Center is located in Mossdeep City.

Prior to Gen 2, Pikachu was the only Pokémon that could learn Thunderbolt naturally, and only in Yellow Version. Speaking of Thunderbolt, only 11 Pokémon can learn it without a TM in Gen 7.

Every single field move has lost its overworld effect in Sun and Moon. Even non-HM moves like Teleport and Soft-Boiled can't be used outside of battle anymore.

The Totem Raticate in Pokémon Moon uses Gumshoos's cry when it first appears.

In Gen 2, if a Pokémon with a status condition (such as sleep or poisoning) is knocked out by Pursuit while switching out and then revived with a healing item, it will still have the status condition from before it was knocked out.

Despite the fact that I really enjoy compiling lists of Pokémon trivia, I'm not actually autistic. I had proper autism tests done on me and everything.

The layout of Celadon Hotel in Gen 1 is almost identical to the layout of a Pokémon Center; in Red and Blue, you can even use an invisible PC in the top-right corner.

Prof. Oak can be made to give the player 5 free Poké Balls in RBY, much like in later games, although there are certain requirements that must be met; the player must have defeated their rival on Route 22, they must not have any Poké Balls in their bag, and they must not have registered any caught Pokédex entries apart from their starter.

The Pokéwalker theme is a remix of the Game Boy Printer theme.
>>
In Gen 2, some status effects didn't affect catch rate at all, like paralysis

The Love Ball in gen 2 only works if you're using the same kind of pokemon as the target, as the same gender. The Moon Ball was basically a normal Poke Ball, too

The slots in gen 1 have a chance of entering a special "mode" every time you spin the slots that guarantees matches over and over, even if you just mash A. The chance of this happening increases if you get the "lucky" machine, which changes every time you enter the Game Corner.

It is impossible to get a shiny female starter in Gen 2, because all female starters have an Attack DV of 0 or 1, and the lowest Attack DV for a shiny is 2.
