What makes this movie weird though that with the movies, while not really canon, still had the main characters along with the same Pokemon they had at the time while the movie aired. In a way, they were very loosely connected, but this one goes out of its way to separate itself entirely more than the other movies did. This begs the question on if this means anything else is going to happen, like are we going to visit Kanto again in the games, or this out of the blue and totally random? There has to be a point to all of this.

Ah, but Sun doesn't have Ash's Pikachu. Ash's Pikachu is the series mascot. The anime and Ash still exist because Ash's Pikachu sells. They even replace the game Pikachu's original cry with the anime one, because they love it so much. They're not going to ever drop him, like it or not.

That said, hopefully we'll get a new anime someday.
