yeah disassemblies are great but only nostalgiafags actually enjoy playing the end result of gb hacks

also i don't love the tools for gen 3 because they fuck me over more than they help, i'd much rather have a disassembly for FR but the IDA does enough

Prism, Red++, Polished Crystal, and TPP Anniversary Crystal all have up-to-date mechanics. Fairy type, Physical/Special split, auto-Repel, Running Shoes, etc. Just like most Gen 3 hacks.

Gen 3's only advantage is the larger screen and potential for better graphics. I say "potential" because most hacks either use their gen's default tiles (which we're all used to by now, so who cares about 2 vs 3), or custom ones (and it's easier to make crappy-looking graphics when you have more colors and pixels to play with). As for Gen 2, Red++ 3.0 could end up looking like the attached.

This is also a Gen 2 map. Gen 3 still had a 16x16 tile grid and 16-bit color like Gen 2; it just also had better pixel art (given more tileset space to work with) and 16 colors per tile instead of 4. Disassembly makes it pretty simple to allow 256 tiles per map, with custom palettes for many maps (like Crystal's Ice Path, or the attached). It takes more work than just sticking tiles into AdvanceMap, but the end result is definitely playable for more than just nostalgia.

I'd say I disagree with you but then I guess I'm a nostalgiafag myself so I wouldn't change your mind.
It's finals week at university here so I've been too busy to work on anything, but I did this a while ago, it got a pretty positive response so may as well repost.

Once pokeruby is complete, there is literally no reason to hack gbc games anymore other than muh nostalgia

Is there any reason to hack any Pokémon game besides personal feelings like nostalgia? It's not like you can sell a ROMhack the way you would an original game.

What do you think of this font? It's meant to be a cross between the FRLG font (my favorite) and the Gen 1 and 2 font. I feel like it's not different enough.

I'm most uncertain about G, K, k, w, and the punctuation marks. Also, which y do you prefer?
>>
>>32449553
G and w look fine by me. I don't know about the k's though. Lowercase k might work better if the diagonal lines were closer to each other vertically (as in make it shorter and closer to the bottom), uppercase K I feel needs closer symmetry; if not perfect symmetry, then the lower diagonal line should be attached to the upper at an earlier point.

I'm also not a fan of uppercase A or uppercase U. The former feels too round at the top, and the latter looks wrong with that line at the bottom right corner as if it were lowercase.

I prefer the rounded y, but you could also make an in-between version (pictured here). I've also edited K and k; yours looked alright to me, but maybe you'll prefer these? I think w is fine. The : and ; could have more space between the dots, and , and ; should be consistent.

Here's the same area in GSC and FRLG. It looks green partly because Viridian has green roofs, and partly because it *might* not be possible to make Center and Mart roofs red and blue.
>>
>>32452028
I feel you. I just feel like in GSC the greens used are fairly different and kinda stand out from each other and in FRLG there is some yellow from the paths. It just breaks up the monotony of the green.

The problem with the screenshot you posted is that the greens are so similar that it all blends together. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice, just fairly samey. At least from a bird's eye view.

I don't know if you can, but I would try making the trees closer in color to FRLG. Just a suggestion.

Thing is, the grass and trees use the same green, with room for three hues plus black. So the trees can't have FRLG's bright green highlights.

I tried shifting the hue to better match FRLG, and can suggest it if you think it looks better.

>Do you know where can I get sound samples close to those of the GB/C?

>>32452533
I honestly don't know a lot about music either. Game Freak themselves didn't do a very good job at getting sound samples matching that of GSC when they made HGSS, so I don't know where to point you regarding that either. I learned how to do things in GSC's engine by porting other stuff, so you porting things does sound like a good beginning, at least.

Hi /heg/, I've had a concept for a game sitting for a while now but I'm wondering if some of the ideas would be too similar to Pokemon Sage's game to the point where it wouldn't be worth pursuing.

Basically the two similarities in question are:

>My region is based on Argentina/Chile, which I know that Sage is also based on somewhere in Mesoamerica or South America
>I came up with a city that I realize is quite similar to that one sage city with the dark overworld and light up buildings (I think mine even had a casino too).

The conceptual doc for my game that I made around a year ago gives that description

>Calypso City is built deep in the mountains and lies in a peculiar location that receives no sunlight at all, meaning that the city experiences “night” for 24 hours. Despite this, Calypso is full of bright lights of streetlamps, casinos and other attractions

So yeah, I'm not sure if this is all too similar. My ideas were conceived independently of sage and most of the environments/concepts were inspired by Final Fantasy X, and the game itself is somewhat of a spiritual successor to Colosseum but with mostly Sinnoh mons. Pic related is the boxart I made for it.

So would this be worth pursuing? Maybe I'm just autistic and overblowing the similarities, because my game isn't derivative of Sage at all. I'd just hate be seen as ripping them off.

Where is the best and current download for Pokemon Prism? What emulator do I need to download?

Also, any save-killing glitches or anything I should know about before starting the game?
>>
>>32454032
Not without a lot of rewriting. In the meantime, there are two unused Pokémon slots and four unused move slots (although you'll have to remove a few checks to use move 255*).

Some Pokémon can be removed with very few people missing them—Igglybuff, Cleffa, Delibird (which would also let you remove Present), maybe Lickitung, the Kanto fossils and legendaries if you don't plan to make them obtainable. Likewise, some moves are useless or redundant: Psywave, Kinesis, Razor Wind, Spider Web (Mean Look clone), Mind Reader (Lock-On clone), etc.

* Specifically:

There's an unofficial group that patches Prism now. The original leaked build had some pretty bad glitches in it, but I think most of them have been found and fixed by now thanks to the unofficial patchers

This has the patch file and the source code. Prism has a special snowflake patcher instead of the normal patch tools, hosted on this website:
http://pokemonprism.com/patcher.html
Any version of Crystal will work with the patcher.

Or, if you just want the prepatched ROM, I have that as well for the current version.

Cool, this is a lot of help, thank you so much! Let me pay you back with obscure Sugimori art.

More noob questions.

So I have to download Crystal to make the game work, as well? Will both that and Prism have a functioning day and night cycle and move in real time, or will time advance as I play the game?

Also, what about saves? If I need to run CCleaner on my PC, will my save files get deleted, too? Do I need to save them externally?
>>
>>32455222
If you just want to play Prism, you can grab that prepatched ROM and not need to get Prism. Day/night does work in real time on BGB (and I think most emulators by this point), but if you use the fast-forward function it will skew the in-game clock, and to my knowledge there's no way to change the clock back in-game if you do that.
Saves on BGB are saved externally, in the same folder as your ROM file by default. I've never used CCleaner but I assume they'd be safe.
Also I've never seen that Sugimori art before, thank you for sharing.

There are tons of sites where you can get Game Boy ROMs. I recommend Emuparadise, the site's old as fuck and somehow never got taken down so it's seemingly safe (though we'll never know for sure since CoolROM was similarly old and got hit by Nintendo) and it doesn't have any malware.

This is called brand loyalty, and it means you're retarded.

Just because GameFreak does something doesn't mean it's good, and people who criticize them for poor game design decisions are right to do so.
Their stamp of approval does not make a good game.

>There have been multiple games since Gen.2

You dumb, mate? Every generation has multiple games. That's the point.
If you're talking about version exclusive legendaries and story events, that started in Gen 3.
You could get both Lugia and Ho-oh in both Gold and Silver, but at different points in the game.

Nintendo is a company that profits by selling multiple versions. Some people will buy both, and players are encouraged to trade to complete the Pokédex. Fan hacks have no reason to split their content into pieces. Just make one version with all of your content in it. The only successful two-version hacks I know of are Drayano's, and that's because they're upgrade patches that have to support both of the original games.
>>
What would be the best Platinum hack, in your opinion?
>>
>>32457005
Man, I feel you and am passing through exactly what you described earlier. I re opened my "projects" folders from 5 years ago (before I started working) and said "This year I'm going to finish those" and decided to start with my ROM Hack.

I refreshed my starters, regional bird, bugs and rodents. Made a checklist for a 2-gym beta release. I drew maps for my region and started playing around with Essentials.

Then I discovered Sage.

My region is based on Brazil, and some of the ideas for mons I have are already used in Sage (such as Harpy Eagle regional bird, Capybara regional rodent, Anteater Rock type (since I have two Ants - Fire and Ice and the Anteater would be SE to both of them), etc.

I know my ideas aren't the most creative of all but I was proud to have had them and also, I feel even if I do my best I won't do anything as good as they are doing.

I "restarted" everything since them (I played the Sage demo two weeks ago) but I don't feel as motivated as I was back then...

>The only successful two-version hacks I know of are Drayano's, and that's because they're upgrade patches that have to support both of the original games.
The only reason Drayano bothers to support both versions is that it would be lazy not to do so with the DS games; you can just unpack them and copy edited files from one game to the other, without any need to mess around with things like repointing data. Most of the files in one version are exactly the same in the other, and each version usually contains everything from the other version anyway.

Name one (1) benefit to having multiple versions that split up the Pokémon you get besides forcing autists to engage in social interaction with other human beings (and that only applies in the older generations before online play removed the need).
And then tell me how it still applies to a fangame that probably won't have anyone else playing it.

Splitting the games into multiple versions has always been a Jew move. The only games that made it at least somewhat passable were the Unova games that actually changed things besides wild exclusives and Legendaries, since they at least gave the player something for picking a specific version.

What would your dream hack be like /vp/?

1. What I want from a hack is emphasis on the world and journey. Rich and varied areas to invest and explore, the kind that really pushes the limits of what can be put in a game. Places so comfy that I would want to visit in real life and the right pokemon to accompany each area.

2. Lots of side questing and secrets to uncover. Like the Regi's in R/S/E that had so much mystery and background than what was probably needed but definitely made the experience and build up so much more immersive.

3. A nice theme and lore would be nice like how Johto in particular pulled it's motif off.

>Point is, their method is tried and true.
From a sales standpoint, yeah. The "feature" literally only exists so they can get more money out of customers willing to buy both versions.
From a gameplay standpoint, very few people are going to be willing to play through both versions of the same game for a minor change or two.
For a romhack, there's no reason to split the story or obtainable Pokemon between two different versions, and it will always be a negative.

>There hsve ALWAYS been multiple versions of the games
Right, for the reason I mentioned above. Gamefreak stands to make money, and the easiest way to do that is to sell the same thing twice. What does this have to do with romhacks?

What Game Freak does and what a fan game does are two different contexts. Different versions work for official releases because the playerbase is actually big enough to justify it. With a fan game only a handful of people are playing it and most fangames don't even have multiplayer to begin with. Doing two versions is 100% pointless and retarded.

>>32456058
The only justification I could see for it is if you wanted to prevent the player from running two really good mons on their in-game team. And I guess there's some flavor to it too.

I wouldn't do full exclusivity, but maybe you could make certain things rarer in one game than in the other. Or make the other "exclusive" mon not available until the post-game.

Maze routes are generally a bad idea because of how often the player needs to go back and forth between towns. Unless you're making a super linear game, don't go for maze routes. The best routes are always the routes with lots of different areas with easy access between them.
>>
>>32465557
That depends. Are you making a kaizo hack intended to frustrate the player? Because if so those hacks always have giant mazes.

When you are crafting your plot, are pokemon active or passive? Is it people driven or pokemon driven?
Example, Gen 1 and 2 was people driven, but gen 3 was pokemon driven.

Meaning, is the efforts of your ET to capture some legendary pokemon? Or are they just doing criminal things with pokemon just being tools a la Team Rocket?

People driven as far as plot goes.
Pokemon driven as far as lore goes.

If you have a flashcart, yes to both of those. I think technically Gen 1 and 2 can have trading capabilities on the 3DS, but you'd probably have to edit a bunch of complicated advanced shit to make it work and I don't have advice for how to do that.

What if I have two evil teams that want to different things?
The plot is pretty congruent up until you get taken to Silent Island by the Peace Troopers for indoctrination.
The leader of the Peace Troopers, Maestro the Conductor, wants to use Harkordia, the Legendary Harmony Pokemon, to force peace and togetherness on the populace. Basically brainwashing everyone into being peaceful.
But Team Dischord's leader and founder of the Underground League "K.O" has been storing the discord created by Team Dischord's actions and the Underground League to awaken the Discordant Legendary pokemon "Discada" to cause total conflict of the populace.
It all boils down to having Peace or Freedom.
Anyways, that would warrant two versions, no?
>>
>>32470812
Think of it like this:

If a player isn't going to want to play the same game twice, it's not worth having two versions.
>>
>>32470854
It was more like Ruby and Sapphire, bro.
With one version being centered around the Peace Troopers and the other version being centered around Team Dischord.
But I look into this thread and combined them like Emerald.
But as I said, they both won't exact opposite things.
Don't see how I could make it one ending without coming off as tedious/annoying.
>Break out of Silent Island.
>Defeat Peace Troopers.
>Stop the Conductor from using Harkordia by kicking his ass
>Fly to the Grand Chasm and stop K.O. from using Discada by kicking his ass.

If the main difference is in the endings, how about fitting them both in one game? Then towards the end the player makes some choice that determines how things play out.

So I've decided to call my GSC romhack Pokemon Coral. I'm going to start namefagging just to make things easier. This is the world so far. The name of the region is Onwa. I have the first and second towns designed, the first route, and the cape to the right where you get your first Pokemon.

The second town is meant to be more of a pit-stop kinda like Cherrygrove in GSC. That big building is a trainer school.

Also, those two gate houses are actually the same house. The first town isn't on the same map as the first route and second town so they don't completely match up 100%. Do you guys think this is an issue?

As for story, it isn't sorted out completely yet, but I am getting some help from a friend who is writing most of it. It's going to be a simple Gen1/2 style story with an evil team that is trying to take over the region and poaches Pokemon to fund their plans.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm currently working on music and other things.
>>
>>32482648
Looks rad man. I like how the first town is bigger than the second and how there is a cove on the side on it's own.

Off to a good start! It's great that the first town isn't the typical two-houses-and-a-lab. The pier makes me want to progress so I can get Surf and come back and explore. Also, your custom boat and lamppost tiles fit right in with the Gen 2 aesthetic. (Mind if I copy them, with credit given to coraldev?) And the two colors of flowerpot are a nice detail. The first route is well-designed, simple but effective, using ledges to avoid the grass on the way back.

Random critiques: the single-tile paths to the doors look out of place in GSC. You can't talk to the man at the table, which is a bit frustrating. The lighthouse mixes walls from two building types. You have total freedom with roof colors, so reusing Violet City's is too familiar.

Also, if you're color-coding Berry trees by type, that's cool, but if not then I'm not personally a fan of non-green ones. (Notice the "holes" where the grass shows through? That looks okay if it's green, otherwise not.)

I'm a fan of making stitched maps for the whole world, so the duplicate gatehouses do bug me. Game Freak had the same issue with the Ruins of Alph in GSC not stitching properly.

Tried applying these changes to your map. Of course, it's just my opinion, some of that could be intentional.

I actually realized that I used an older version of Route 1 in that picture. This is the newer one. I do like the fixes with the first route that you did to make everything stitch together right, so I'm going to change that.

As for your critiques. I didn't think the single tile paths looked that bad, but if it bugs people I can change it. Also yeah. I'm probably going to tweak the roofs sometime. Sunset Bay is also using Olivine City's default roofs for now.

With the lighthouse, I was going for a striped lighthouse how many lighthouses have red and white stripes in real life.

The berry trees are all green in game. They show up orange in crowdmap for some reason.

Thanks for actual critique. Helps out a lot.

It's "穏和" which is the Kanji for calm and peace. Together google translate says it means mild, but idk. It kinda sounded like it could be a region name, so I just went with it.

>>32484027

>>
>>32484027
Two individual kanjis together to make one word doesn't mean each of the Kanji share any meaning. Mild in Japanese just happens to have the same Japanese spelling of both calm and peace just put next to one another so instead of making a whole new Kanji for Mild the Japanese decided to use the Kanji of both calm and peace to just conveniently fit. They do that with every time a word just so happens to have two other words in it even if the two don't fit. I think the Kanji for thunder has the kanji wife and farm in it even if neither have to do with thunder.

going to samefag my post, just expanding on the idea slightly

the cave could be an optional little detour that is almost completely flooded, consisting mostly of surf-able water, with a little room in the entrance where you can climb around, grab some items after fighting a trainer, then jump off a ledge to return to the route.

here's a key to the image:

grey = regular cave tiles
blue = surfable water
black dome = cave entrance
black person = npc trainer
red/white ball = item
brown dome = impassable rock
brown line = ledge
white shape = impassable rock in water
>>
>>32485369

the second part of the cave across the water wouldn't be accessible until whenever you get surf, and as such you could easily add a second floor with higher level pokemon and even use it as a tunnel between the route closest to whatever city you get surf in and the first route
>>

Some random mechanic ideas for you to think about. i can actually code in Essentials, so ask for help if you're lost while coding:

For the Discada or whatever guy as I had this in mind:
>When Discada switches in, weather and field effects are removed
>Pokémon that had an in-battle form change (Meloetta, Aegislash, Minior, Ditto...) have their form reverted

I think it fits the whole "Neutral" theme very well, so it's kinda like Aura Break (Zygarde) but in a different flavour and very unique "no you DONT" feel IN MY OPINION

Other mechanic, this one would fit a Grass/Water/Fire trio very well, all reusing the Pledge mechanics, which would make for a cool double-battles-focused game.
>(Grass legendary) Summons a Swamp on switch in, which slows enemies on the field.
>(Fire) Summons a Firey Field, which damages all enemies after each turn.
>(Water) Summons a Rainbow, which acts like Serene Grace, doubling secondary effect chances
>>
>>32487411
Misc.
>Ability that doses the enemies with Powder: Powder is a Vivillion-exclusive move, which makes the target take damage when they use a Fire Move and waste the turn. I think this would fit with either moth-like Pokémon, or dynamite/gunpowder related Fakémon.
>Move+Ability combo for a Smeargle/Mimic Fakémon: This Pokémon always has a certain move (Draft?) and when it switches in, it automatically learns one of the enemies' moves during that battle (not forever, just like Mimic works).
>Kecleon-style Pokémon: A Camoflage ability, that makes it change type (maybe just adds a secondary type, so it's not a nuisance to lose it's primary type) when it switches in depending on the field
>When this Poké switches in, an ally is healed (33? Basically lesser Regenerator).

What do you think about Pokemons disobeying the trainer after over-leveling?
Gives the badges some bigger significance than just moving the plot forward, encourages the growth of the whole team and helps in balancing the gym leaders
On the other hand, it puts limitations on the players and can be a nuisance
>>
>>32488413
I believed this is how they worked when I first played Blue. It was frustrating to keep my team below level 30 up to the fourth Gym, when Erika had two at level 29. Disobedience could work if the cap stays somewhat above the current NPCs' level, so you have to have some level of skill, you can't just spam random moves and make up for it by being 15 levels higher. (5 should be okay, more than 10 you might want to discourage.)
>>
>>32488413
Too RNG, one extra level suddenly makes every encounter get dragged for too long just because of sleep/confusion/Charizard behaviour. If you could somehow simply it to "at the end of the turn, stats are lowered sharply" or something but removing the random factor, I honestly don't think disobedience is any good for the game.

The theme boils down to Law and Chaos.
Harkordia represents harmony and order.
Diskada represents Discord and Chaos.
But Harkordia is almost used in the plot to brainwash the populace into being peaceful and docile. Basically turning everyone into "sheeple" lol
Diskada is used in the plot cause everyone to devolve into strife. Like everyone starts fighting each other like that scene in Kingsman.
>>
>>32488504
Because the leader of Team Dischord is like this Fight Club-esque guy who believes that conflict is what makes life worth living. Chaos is the driving force of creation.
>>
>>32488466
Also, I agree with the items part.
Maybe I make it so Harkordia lowers Attack and Special Attack or prevents stats from being raised
And Diskada raises attack and Special attack, or doubles stat boosts.
Eh, I don't know. Don't like these either.
>>
>>32488445
>>32488458
My idea for the encounters/leveling would be to:
encounter 1st and 2nd stage of Pokemons, all withing their evolution level limitations
the lower exp gain in the later part of the game would be made up with more pokemon battles
I want for my game to have a focus on the bond with your pokemon and I thought the disobeyence mechanic could be quite fitting
Also I'm planning to have some sort of uncommon item that would decrease the level of the pokemon by one (carefully distributed so their use would be somewhat strategic)

With these informations, is this mechanic more justified? I think I may be rather set on doing it but I want to hear any criticism or other ideas.
>>
>>32488504
>Harkordia
>No field effects allowed (Tailwind, Trick Room, Misty Field etc)
>Every Pokémon receives the same stat boosts as the enemy at the end of the turn, meaning Harkordia could gimp themselves with something like Curse and give that same -Speed and +Atk to its enemies in the field, but it also means everytime it uses Growl or TailWhip, it also loses those stats to itself
>Discada
>Every Pokémon in the field has Moody (sharply raises one stat, lowers another) on top of their normal ability (replace sounds bad but would work)

I think both of these specializing on stats works REALLY WELL if I do say so myself. Harmony/Equality and Diskada/Chaos translate well into battle with these examples.
>>

Beautiful digits, also I think if you're going full Fakémon you could really play around with using stat abilities like Unaware, Hyper Cutter etc often

Forget about the terrain part in harkordia, just make them play with battle stats

So, I've been working on inserting the music I've composed for Coral into the game. I think I've pretty much got it down. This is all the music I have composed so far, but I'm about to start writing the music for the second town.

These are all inserted into the game, btw.

Sunset Bay:
http://picosong.com/MP92/

Route 1:
http://picosong.com/MP96/

Wild Battle Theme:
http://picosong.com/MP9E/

Any thoughts or suggestions?
>>
>>32490510
The music is really good, you're a very talented composer.
In fact, the Route 1 theme makes me wish the route was longer, since it's very pleasant to listen to.

Speaking of Route 1, I really like how you made it easy to travel back through like Route 29, for that unavoidable re-visit to the first town. But I feel like a Cut tree would be useful to cut the time going the other way.

The other two tunes fit nicely with the general aesthetic of GSC. I'm glad to finally hear a unique wild battle theme that's even better than the original.

Holy shit, these work very well, you did a good job at porting them to the engine. I'll try to critique what I can without getting too nitpicky.
I have a rule of thumb that you should never set both pulse channels to the same dutycycle unless they're far enough apart in octave to stand out from each other, else you risk the two channels blending together (unless that's the intention of course). Your Route 1 theme and battle theme don't have this problem due to the octave difference mentioned, but I think your town theme has this problem a bit due to its lower octaves. Changing the dutycycle of the supporting pulse channel would fix this, but you could also possibly just increase the volume of the main melody so it can stand out more if you feel keeping the dutycycles the way they are is a priority.
I can't think of anything to say about Route 1 that wouldn't be super nitpicky, it's all-around solid, even if I still feel the ending is a bit too similar to Route 29 for just an homage (which I don't plan on pushing since you're fine with the similarity).
[cont.]
>>
>>32490510
>>32491468
The battle theme is also really solid, but I feel there are a few improvements that could be made. The biggest fault I find with it is that, when the waveform channel takes the melody, it doesn't feel loud enough. This is a tricky thing to fix, though, due to how limited the waveform channel can be. I assume it's already at max volume given the audio balance, so your options would be increasing the octave (which would change the feel drastically), decreasing the pulse channel volumes (which might make things seem not intense enough), or changing the waveform for that part of the song (which would again change the feel). Beyond that, I think the long notes in the main melody could use a longer fadeout in volume.
I think that's all I have to say unless I want to get into specifics of individual note intensity changes or something super nitpicky like that, though. These are all damn good, especially as your first songs ported to the engine. You seem to have all the core of the engine down. I'm really going looking forward to what you do in the future.

Looks really comfy, what mons will be in the region and will there be HMs?
>>
To the Greek region guy, if you're doing fakémon, why don't you make the Greek God characters (E4 were like Mars, Venus, Poseidon etc right?) and make UB for the planets in the solar system? I think you could pick up where SM left and make a UB-heavy plot, with an evil team following "prophecies" in order to summon the ancient ones from another dimension or smth

idk just a thought
>>
>>32492830
>Fairy
>Split

HM removal depends on how you build the region. MegaEvolution and ZMoves is something I don't care about. If I were doing an Essentials game, I'd come up with my own "power up" mechanic.

I'm writing the script for the beginning areas of my fangame. Currently, I'm right before the player chooses his first Pokémon and I want to give the type advantage choice to the player.

Basically, the rival will choose his starter first and then the player can pick the one super effective against it or the other. This choice will affect two important NPC's reactions to you (and the first early game decision).

I need advice on the rival's decision, though. At first, I wanted to make it random, but as I wrote the script I thought of making a conversation and basing the player's answers to choose the rival's starter.

Do you think that will be a problem? (since the player will then have only 2 options to pick from?)

As long as it's reasonable I think it can work. Make the first badge around level 30, the third badge 40, I dunno.

If anyone cares, it's already basically done

All Pokemon obtainable (not just in the wild)
Evolution items are changed to be used like Evolution Stones
Restored the Poke Flute
Celebi event implemented
All trainers have their levels scaled up and the Kanto curve has been fixed
Gym leaders have stronger teams and use Pokemon from both regions
TMs are reusable (despite still having a count)
Wide variety of available Pokemon throughout
Updated move sets
Evo Stones and Kurts Pokeballs can be purchased at Goldenrod Dept Store
A few Pokemon without evolutions have had slight stat buffs
>>
>>32494001
Well all the routes are going to be new, so there won't be an Ice Cave or Blackthorn. Also, I'm not the hugest fan of most Alola Variations, but I plan on putting in a few.

I'm going to put Alolan Riachu as an alt evolution of Pikachu with a Malasada instead of a Thunder Stone, Alolan Marowak as Cubone's alt evolution at night, and you are going to be able to catch (or be given I haven't decided yet) a single Alolan Exeggutor.

Where can I get Gen4-styled sprites of gen 6+ Pokémon? I've coded really good stuff like two-frame animations, including custom per species (but if not defined uses just a simple one) and I love the gen 4 battle appearance, but the lack of sprite worries me. Should I make a game with just gen 1 to 4 Pokémon?

The gen 5 sprites of stock Essentials have ugly backsprites and are too big compared to true gen 4 sprites, so those are an issue too.

But those are too small - DS ideally uses 80x80 (100x100 in Gen V) where as GBA is restricted to 64px. I knew of this resource before, is there ANYTHING else? Smogon sprites are made for Gen V (with tall backsprites and extended sprite size).

its driving me nuts because I dont know if I should just use all 64x64 sprites. Thoughts? Am I thinking about it too much?

pic related is a Gen 7 sprite in 64x64, middle is HGSS Venusaur, right is 64x64 Venusaur: I cant really mix them

Pokémon Uranium did something like this and it was fucking stupid. Just let your character get the first pick and have the rival pick afterwards, don't turn it into a thing.
>>
>>32493766
If anything, limit the player to two choices, and the rival gets another. Heck, the rival could get one that is always SE against either of the player's choices. That seems fair to me, honestly, and if the rival is all "Don't mind if I do!" he gets another layer of personality anyway.

Give the player an illusion.

Any way to disassemble a rom?
Most of my work was done in assembly, then I built the rom, and used a few editing programs to make small changes

Don't want to reassemble a new rom and then go back into those editors and make all those changes all over again
>>
>>32496623
Copy+paste your own assembly code into pokecrystal's files. You did save the code, right?

If you made small changes with editing programs, like to stats, then open your ROM in the program, read off the values, and enter them into pokecrystal. If it has a text export feature that'd help.

For simple contiguous data tables, it may be faster for you to find the table's address in your ROM and write, say, a Python script to read the ROM, parse the table, and output pokecrystal code.
>>
>>32496885
Example: battle/moves/moves.asm. The "Moves" label has a comment "41afb", and if you go to offset 41afb of pokecrystal.gbc, that's the moves table. You don't even need to use pokecrystal's named constants for values, just read N bytes at that address and output "db $01, $00, $28, $00, $ff, $23, ..."

It's nicely laid out and I love what you were going for. The houses having their own gardens and the major areas have their own sections.

I don't know about the placement of the pokecenter and the pokemart being so far apart in an area like that. Maybe switch the canter and one of the houses?

The entry way to the lab is awkward. The cliffs don't align accordingly.

The back cliff behind the gym isn't the appropiate tile. I made that mistake before in Advance Map.

>>32498799
Done, and added another section. Normally I'd just finish the song before releasing another WIP with how close I am but I'm unsure about whether the waveform background part in the new section. It's not really similar to the original part in the GBA version, but I really want to make sure the different sections of melody have different instrumentation like the original because it really fucking pisses me off how ORAS misses the different instruments and sticks mostly with accordian, and that requires I use the pulse channel for some parts. The part is still soft so it hopefully won't be too jarring compared to the original, but I think it's good to ask for opinions anyway in case it goes to far in what it changes.

Unova's café gym was Fire/Water/Grass
The Normal gym was a museum.
This is much different than either in several ways.
The Battle Café isn't an actual gym, but rather another battle facility.
The normal-type gym leader is a scout that sets you on the gym challenge by inviting you to lunch and explaining the process, then he proceeds to battle you in a designated area.
This place is also fairly important to the plot, as well.
