They're only considered disappointing as people expected allot out of them. As the Gen 3 and 4 starters set the starter bar to "high quality". The shell samurai is my favorite(the hate it receves is undeserved desu), banana snake is okay, sumopig is redundant but has a god tier shiny and wide movepool. They're objectively better than Gen 2's starters, but people will never agree as they also have nostalgia going for them, and you know much of a mental drug nostalgia is.

I quit Pokemon around the Gen 5 hype, so I don't know shit about what people wanted from these three. Honestly, aside from them being trash competitively I see nothing wrong. They all look pretty good. Emboar kind of sucks because Infernape exists, but it's alright on its own.

Now, the basic stages on the other hand, they look pretty ugly.

Emboar is my favorite fire starter and 5th gen was my favorite generation, but the starters as a whole were a pretty big let down. Pure water and pure grass were boring and a third fire fighting in a row meant embarrassing already had a tough life ahead of it. Not to mention samurotts radical change in design from Dewott. It really doesn't matter whether dewott should of looked more like samurotts or vice versa, but there was obviously an issue that should of been dealt with before finalizing. And grass always seems to get shit on. Not sure why

They aren't liked because they come after the gen 4 starters.

Going from unique type combos to single types is disappointing. Emboar is still my favorite fire starter though.

Dewott should of looked more like Samurott though. Its normal for a three stage line to end up visually different from first to final as middle stages usually bridge the transitonal jump.

This generation had no idea what they were doing and mixed the design notes up before giving them to the artists
