Why is Sugimori's old art so comfy?
Because it was real art and not some digital garbage
It makes me so happy.
Seriously what the fuck happened to make him change art style and coloring this drastically?
I wonder who will take over on art when he retired or passes away too an if they would be better or worse.
For real, if you're at least 20 years old and have been playing pokemon for a while, and this Charizard doesn't give you emotions, you have no soul.
Posting the ones that make me want to cry the most.
ouch
Actual watercolors instead of just digital coloring like he's had since RS. I think he still inked his lines by hand at least for a while after that, though.
I still like his modern art and technically he's definitely improved if you look at his more elaborate stuff, but his older art definitely has a different charm from his newer stuff, and his style itself very clearly changed for humans around Platinum. Personally I like his human art from circa Crystal and circa FRLG the most.

Ohmura did most of the Pokemon art for SM and it shows in the coloring and linework. Sugimori only did art for the Alolan Forms, the new Zygarde forms, and I think Magearna and Ash-Greninja.
Ohmura has left Game Freak though, so who knows who'll do the art for Gen VIII's Pokemon, especially since he was supposedly being groomed up to replace Sugimori at some point for quite some time.
Lapras had teeth once.

I'm not saying his old art is better. I'm saying it's comfortable. Looking at it gives me a unique feeling of nostalgia - probably because the times when those pictures floated around were the best ones in my life.
I'm sure lots of people here can relate too.

Delete this!!! Lapras is pure
Ugly, Pokemon conquest art is still the best
>>32438320
Ohmura left? Praise the heavens!
Hopefully Sugimori returns to do all the Pokemon art in Gen VIII
this changed everything
>>32438367
His new art while not as watercolor-y or simple still has nice less thick lines and shading to me. I wouldnt mind it.
>>32438367
I like some of Ohmura's Pokemon designs, but I'm really not a fan of his artwork or most of his humans.
I'd like to see Ariga or Mizutani take a shake at doing the Pokemon art, but I really would like Sugimori to keep at it if possible.

Please let me besadhappy before I have to get back to work.
;_;
Remembering the first time I fought this legend. Caught him in an Ultra Ball, cause I wasted my Master Ball on Moltres (I was eight), and felt like such a BA.
Looking at this thread made me watch Butterfree's goodbye and now I'm crying like a fucking newborn.
I hate all of you.

Mewtwo Y looks a million times better in this artstyle.
>>32438559
And sexy.
>>32438559
1 000 000 x 0 still is 0
One of the ugliest mons yet
>>32438559
It looks meaner and more sinister, instead of just a cutemon. I like it. Leave cute to Mew.
>>32438464
>I wasted my Master Ball on Moltres
fucking me
>>32438289
I've never been a big fan of Charizard so that does nothing for me.
The king looks so beast.
>>32438778
>Nidoking and Lugia are my favourite pokemon.
>Their 3D models look like ass and made them fatter than they've ever been.
Why does gamefreak want all the cool pokemon to have giant bellies?
Badass bug bump
>>32438289
I've had that exact sentiment before. That image, and any images of Pikachu drawn in the original fat style always make me feel very nostalgic and emotional.

Kill yourself.
OG Blastoise is best Blastoise. I ordered the PC Blastoise plush recently and I hate the light, almost gray blue they use for him now.

pic for reference
The art on these cards is amazing
>>32438959
>>32438964
>>32438969
One thing I didnt like about most of the old cards, atleast the base set, was they were just the official art with a sparkly background.
I will admit one thing I do like is seeing all the art styles of other artists drawing pokemon that began to kick off in the first expansions.
>>32438272
the cute water color aesthetic
A poster exists of the original image, with all three beasts together. Sadly I can only find a small, blurry image of it, but it's absolutely beautiful art. O had the opportunity to buy the poster once, and I passed on it, which I really regret now.
>>32438993
Whoops, forgot to post the picture...
>>32438978
The real peak of Pokemon card art, imo, was the e-reader era. Expedition base set, Aquapolis,Skyridgeespecially, and VS Series especially. There was no stock art used for those cards, and even some trainer cards had pretty artwork.
Best cards are the ones with photographed figures/sculptures.
>>32438289
i never liked charizard....
>>32439079
Probably because you were too busy liking DICK.
>>32438289
>implying
I always fucking hated Charizard, and I still do.
>>32439019
top taste
>>32438464
Part of the reason I like Sugi's old art is the proportions. Things had a cartoony big-headedness to them. Look at this Mewtwo pic, and then his XY model.
I think that the TCG art is still glorious as always.
ITT: Genwunners who need to go back to facebook.
>>32440880
And the game art too!
I think that the new artstyle try to be too perfect, thing which is good but probably make seem less organic the creature.
Pokémon is only adapting to the new Anime style.
>>32438937
At least in Gen VII it recover its teeth.
>>32438289
I like the boxart version better
>>32438272
watercolor
hand drawn over digitalwent simple to appeal to the newer generation of kids
>>32438272
>comfy
>>32440928
That's an example of Ohmura, not Sugimori, and it's the anime trying to adapt to him.
>>32442426
>>32442551
I mean that the artstyle of Pokémon in general is only adapting to the new whole anime standards, more bright, soft and perfect lineart than before.
