You've got the right idea, I just didn't want to overdo it. I was shooting for low-key cyberpunk that basically comes off as a dork, so >>32445202's response is expected. Almost intended. And now for a design I'm actually kinda proud of, little redhead's just basically my de facto "main".

So a lotta Pokemon have toxins, spores, special organs, minerals, etc in their bodies. Wilhelmine is an alchemist who, once an enemy Pokemon is incapacitated, she can extract this essence and use it in potions that can be used both on allies, and against enemies. My go-to example would be making a potion with Jumpluff spores as a main ingredient, which when drank would cause puffballs to sprout all over you, and make you lighter-than-air and able to float for a little while before it wears off. But it could also be as simple as making a poison to be thrown at enemies, or take venom from a Salandit in particular to use as a throwable metal solvent. Sadly she's still yet to get much field-testing, but she's an idea I'm hyped to try out.

Also she cultivates mushrooms on a Torterra I still need to draw.

Original character? I'm still struggling to come up with solid idea's for a second character that seem even SOMEWHAT original! This red head here is an amalgamation of all the creativity I had, so I have very little left.

I'm fairly new to this medium, so I'm still getting the feel for it, and I'm still struggling to find a way to make her unique as far as personality and interactions go. However, I think her design is decent from a visual standpoint.

By which I mean I can't bring myself to. Anytime someone wants me to draw something and I actually accept, it's usually several months before I get around to finishing it. I don't know why I lose interest so quickly and lack overall motivation. Even my own stuff is usually either unfinished or minimally-shaded.

Though I am decently likely to draw someone's character for the RP group that spawned from here, I'm not sure when we're good to recruit again. Maybe once another introductory newbie quest gets set up.

And I know the OP says characters and trainers, but this is the map I made for the RP. All the towns were fleshed out, there were 15 total gyms the players could have faced, minimum required for the pokemon league being 8 as par the course.

The rival pictured above wasn't going to be a gym leader or anything, but had a team based entirely on a HG nuzlocke run I did before the RP.

It was a Discord group that set place on a decently constructed region (or at least just a small area thereof) that I'm pretty sure became a fucking trainer school setting after a time. Which is cliche and limiting for what kind of characters could be involved. Changing the setting, though, doesn't change the overall quality of the writers present. The fact that "a lot of previously important people" left is up in the air. Could have been good writers, could have been shit. Important and skillful aren't necessarily related. Still, if anything, what I saw of the place left a serious bad taste in my mouth. I remember everybody got some special skill, and a lot of people chose relatively tame shit being good at throwing balls or some basic chemistry, and then other people became D&D bards, could turn into Dittoslime, and had big fucking Excadrill claws instead of hands. At any rate, the Signature Skills were just a way to help give people a more distinct role in quests. Some of them are complex and depend on the GM like the alchemist above, but others are simple and potent like Maple's ability to freely switch once at certain turn intervals when adjacent to her Pokemon.

Anyway if you are Ofus or someone else who joined in what I estimate to be December-February, the entire structure of admins has been changed. An event happened that brought us to a new region for the sake of giving now-experienced people to rework a setting from the ground up instead of just winging it like Sileda, which was useful largely for experimentation's sake. That person who probably yelled at you a lot is gone, we aren't holding up progress for the sake of some far-fetched plans with an evil team, and roll20 quests are getting cranked out with more frequency and quality than ever. Worldbuilding is now something much more accessible to everyone and has been fun to work with since the event. The people who left were generally the ones that never RPed or never even got around to finishing their characters, along with two mods who weren't going anywhere with their work and decided to step down.

Trainer school was never gonna happen, it was the plan back in like late 2015 but we dropped it fast. The girl who can meld with her Ditto is obviously still there, and is mine, and I believe that with input of others I have struck a good balance with its usability and in-universe sensiblenesss.

I understand if not, but I would like to challenge you to show what sort of well-written character you'd propose.

Maybe I'm unique when I prefer realism, even in Pokemon. To me, the setting of Pokemon isn't necessarily an invitation for farout, supernatural extravaganzas to take place. It's about people, with their very strong pets, going on an adventure together. Regular people, doing their best, out against the world.

I've got some characters up my sleeve, but I'd rather not reveal them, and subsequently my identity. So I'll sketch a little something out. Barebones.

Start with a central idea about who the character is. Not going to worry about gender to start with. Let's go with, say, trainer trying to be a great Co-Ordinator in the Beauty and Cute contests. That's a bit generic, so we spice it up. They strive to use non-traditionally cute and pretty Pokemon. Muk, Metang, Conkeldurr. Pokemon that would be traditionally seen as cool or tough. A Feebas with an Everstone as their ace or something.

The trainer wants to show the inherent beauty in all Pokemon. It doesn't matter how ugly they may seem, there's an inner beauty that can shine, just so long as it's nurtured and polished and given a chance. They want to prove this because... either they're fairly plain in terms of appearances and have been constantly overshadowed by their prettier, more popular sibling and have developed an inferiority complex. Or, because the trainer themselves is traditionally attractive but fear that that's all there is to them. The overall idea being, that if their conventionally unattractive Pokemon can win Cute contests, appearances aren't everything, that there's something to them, more than a pretty face.

Alright, I've got time to explain a bit further.

So basically, we use an original region, and while it exists in the same world and other regions can be mentioned/included in character backstories, we keep to our region for RP, the Brumnim Region. The region contains many areas, towns and otherwise, where normal, casual RP can be started by anyone and joined, as well as Quests (which are canonically posted on some kind of electronic bulletin, and are all listed in one of the Discord channels) that involve dangerous expeditions through dangerous areas, mediation with townsfolk and other social issues, or large boss battles against insanely powerful and usually berserk Pokémon, though mecha and bioweapons have also appeared as bosses. Anyone can make a quest and then post it, which they will then GM, but mods will go through some checks and balances for fairness until you have shown to be decently proficient in making and running quests (being able to keep track of an average party of 4, knowing how to structure encounters and not give out overpowered capturable mons/items left and right).

When join, you submit a character sheet and an image if you are able to, most of the time a drawfag will help you there. I'm not even nearly the best one, either. You start out with 2-3 Pokémon of your choosing with a maximum cumulative level of 50. So for example, Wilhemine up there started with a Lv32 Torterra, a Lv10 Morelull, and a Lv8 Alolan Grimer.
Human characters don't have statistics really attached to them, GMs will often recognize their character traits and give bonuses for rolls accordingly but generally they aren't statistically very different from each other. (I'll continue in another post, there's a lot to explain.)

Though, that means she seeks out Pokemon based on appearance, which is an inherently superficial thing, and would later on throw her through a loop. Yeah, that's got potential. Put big ugly on the backburner, gonna' focus on cutie patootie.

Not enough people give their Pokemon personalities. They're separate characters in their own right, really. They're not just weapons, they're entities for the character to interact with. So this girl, she's got a Hydreigon that loves being groomed, loves the opportunity to be under the limelight, likes feeling pretty. Maybe gets carried away at times, can't control their own strength, and attacks come out with too much force-- instead of making a pretty light show with Dragon Pulse, they destroy the bleachers by mistake.

A more combat-oriented Seismitoad that doesn't really like contests, but puts up with them because it's what their trainer wants, and they love/respect their trainer for whatever reason. Makes beautiful music by vibrating their warts, shit sounds downright operatic.

A modest Carbink that has trouble coming out of its shell, feeling as though it'll never truly be as good as a Diancie.

So that's a team of three, that's enough to start. Probably good to add a few more. Gives the trainer something to work with, Pokemon to manage, obstacles for them to overcome together. That sort of shit.

This is where "Signature Skill" comes in, a special talent unique to each character, in order to provide some additional specialty aside from the type of team they use. Some characters keep it simple, like getting a free switch when adjacent to their Pokémon every few turns or getting a set bonus to strength-based checks, and some go for something more complex like taking effects from Pokémon extracts, or being able to perform a specific set of psychic feats, though generally sheer potency is inversely proportional to complexity, and people will work together to make sure each of these is balanced and makes sense.

Fashion is important to the culture, appearances matter a great deal, contests are big. Growing up, she wanted to fit in, and her looks gave her a free ticket into the popular girl club. Became a cheerleader because "it was the thing everybody else was doing," and it looked good. Obsessed about makeup and clothing because that's what everybody else was talking about. Wouldn't go out with certain people because it'd negatively impact her status.

Was her heart really in all this? Had she spent all this time culminating an appearance of luxury and allure for nothing? Was she just another snob? She used to be nice. She used to have interests she liked. What happened to catching bugs and making mudpies with fuckin', with Jean-Paul, back when they were kids? She hadn't talked to Jean-Paul in ages. Why was that? She needs a change. Needs to find herself, figure things out. Time to finally set out on her Pokemon journey and do something, learn who she really is.

So she's got a good understanding of fashion, aesthetics. Maybe that can branch off into an interest in art eventually. She can act a bit standoffish and snobbish, but she's trying to work on that, trying to be a bit nicer. Friendly, to an extent Confident, competitive, extroverted, ambitious. Insecure, repressed, easily angered.

That seems like a pretty okay character.

I actually agree with basically everything you said. Actually I think I remember you, and that character idea seemed solid back then too. Allow me to attempt to defend myself though.

Jane's ability to meld with her Ditto has heavy limits imposed, and does not give her superhuman powers, per se. Her muscular strength is lessened, her size is reduced, and she risks a simultaneous KO of herself and her main Pokémon if an enemy targets her. Her Ditto is also unable to use Transform normally; it cannot take the form of an enemy while Jane is melded, and cannot use their moves, at most disguising as inanimate objects, and even then has some tells that an observant enough enemy can see through. Also due to reduced strength, she cannot exert any considerable force when spread too thin; even if she could fit a bit of herself in a keyhole, she wouldn't be able to muster even the dexterity to pick it. And I think she has some size limits as well, so there's no way for her to get her whole body through something like that.

The advantages include being more stealthy, fitting into places that would normally be exclusive to small Pokemon, and variable advantages to movement depending on terrain and scaleable objects. In addition, she is far more relaxed and mentally stable like this, and is less likely to be frightened or panicked.

So as you can see, neither she nor the Ditto are fully capable in this mode, and what they can do is only possible through being sole partners for the two decades or so of their lives so far. Even then, it's not used too often, usually having her Ditto out and separate is much more useful to accomplish tasks both in and out of conflict, but when they do meld, I believe it's been played out responsibly and without breaking the setting. As such it's not something I want to completely remove, but I really don't want you to count yourself out simply because of it. As for things such as mutated and berserk Pokémon, (cont...)

Casual is completely freeform, people come in chat shit just, casually RP.
Fights normally have a ref (someone to say damage) or some like to just take it to showdown.
Quest rp, depends entirely on the GM.
While I personally like to just wing it, some like stats and number.
Due to it being pokemon having to make a sheet for every mon and form feels like a hassle to me so I roll some dice and make shit up. People seem to like it.

I've RPed contests before, and a friend of mine's character is a dedicated Co-Ordinator. It's kind of fun-- you write detailed scenes of Pokemon doing performances, using moves creatively. Take some pages from the anime for that sort of shit, it's got good concepts. It's not as straight-forward as battling, though, you have to be a bit more inventive and flexible.

As for contests, we need a concrete system for how to score them, but also sheer numbers. If we use three judges, which we should, we'll probably need at least 11 people to participate in the contest RP total for it to be interesting.

The biggest difficulty so far is the battle phase. The Appeals can be more or less a judged creative writing exercise on a timer, but we haven't figured out a good way to make the appeal score matter in battles, or how to implement a consistent and fair system for moves getting boosted by presentation value.

The pokedex itself is just a device that detects locations of pokemon and sends that info back to the professors, like bird watching.

The only example of non-uniform sizes in the games are, to my knowledge, the various fishermen that ask the player to bring large Magikarp, Barboach, Lotad, etc..

When it comes to sizes, I much prefer the anime. It has more opportunities to show ranges in size, with stuff like Nurse Joy's giant Magikarp, or all the different Charizards hanging out around Charicific Valley. I always figure that the Pokedex just gives average height and weight.

Closest to an OC I have is a delphox named Guyphox Threepwood. I've only 'used' him in two settings, an RP and one for a [spoilerohfuckitwhocare?]crossover fanfic called Pokemon: Fallout Green. Basically the Pokemon setting with craploads of Fallout elements (FEV and ghoulified 'regional variants', power armors and energy weapons, post nuclear-apocalypse).

Guyphox's one consistency between incarnations is that beyond just being a pokemon, he was raised as a brother to his trainer and often ends up contrasting a bit.

I don't really have any special art for him but he doesn't exactly look different from other delphox.

He is Cybort. He uses mostly electric and steel types. He is a mechanically engineered killing machine who strives to be loved and accepted.

Gender: Male ((Thank God I never went through the gender phase, but I almost turned gay for a while)
Looks: Brown hair, brown eyes, tall (usually has a scar over his left eye)
Attire: Black Longcoat with blue on top, black fedora with a golden trim that has a golden feather on it, white dress shirt with a weird teal ribbon-looking thing around the collar, black dress pants, Black military boots
Weapons: a katana, occasionally a claymore, and almost always a black shield with some autistic emblem on it (it's a crescent moon with blue flames on the black part), and also one or two fucking glocks because that's the only pistol I knew
Powers (if applicable): Fire, Darkness, and when fitting to the theme of the RP black wings because he's a fallen angel or some shit like that
Backstory: Nobody understands his pain because he never tells people shit because it makes him all mysterious or whatever
Pokémon (again, if applicable, I used it in a ton of different roleplays): Lucario, Shiny Umbreon, some legendary like Keldeo or something, Typhlosion, Houndoom maybe, idk what the fuck else

It would probably would get kind of sue-ish, or at least special snowflakey. One of the things with Fallout Green would be that, the wastelands have loaned to some less-than-league-approved tactics.

Like Mutant-Machamps quad-wielding miniguns.

In Guyphox's case, he'd be running around with a laser pistol and a rank 85 in the explosives skill.
