If you look closely at each Elite Four Champion’s iris color, it foreshadows one of the colors of the next generation games.
Green’s eyes are gold-> Pokemon Gold and Silver
Lance’s eyes are a deep blue (from GS art)-> Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire
Steven’s eyes are very light blue-> Pokemon Diamond and Pearl
Cynthia’s eyes are black-> Pokemon Black and White
Alder’s eyes are blue and Iris’ eyes are red-> Pokemon X and Y
Diantha’s eyes are blue-> Pokemon Sun and Moon
Professor Kukui’s eyes are difficult to tell…

I meant that their eyes represent one of the two next generation games main colors. It's impossible to have a black iris though, however, grey is the closest possible iris color to black.

Ho-Oh has a primary red body. Lugia has dark blue highlights
Reshiram has a tail tip that glows red and has blue eyes. Zekrom has a tail tip that glows blue and has red eyes. B2W2 made it clear that the tail tips are emphasized for the red/blue pattern.
