Just did a run a few weeks ago where i never used another pokemon aside from hm slaves and beat the game using only mudkip, would have been even easier to do it with swampert.

We want different things. You probably didn't like treecko, and appreciated that they threw out its gecko-y look for a feathered dinosaur, only to be disappointed when it combined the two and became a gecko-y dinosaur. I personally like like grovyle the least out of the three, but I know a lot of people like it just because of mystery dungeon.

I always found the late game double battles to be pretty nasty as well, regardless of the starter choice

His special attack isn't bad, it's pretty decent. That's one of the reasons he is so good. Because ground is physical and water is special and swapert can use both. He's got great coverage and isn't raped byt the gen 3 physical special system

I think he's actually better in the originals than in the remakes, at least early on, since Mud Shot and Mud Slap are physical
