I basically stopped playing Pokemon, too. I love the monsters and characters and such, but the games seriously aren't even fun to play anymore.

Have you tried fan games? Some of them are really bad but they normally focus on fun single payer with a decent story and much better battles with real difficulty. I personally recommend pokemon rejuvenation

Took you long enough. I got there in Gen 4. Stopped playing for 4 years, got back in with BW. Stopped playing for another 2 years, returned with BW2. Went back to play Platinum, but got bored and stopped playing again. XY came, and so did I. Gave up half in ORAS. Now SM brought me back. Who knows how long I'll last this time.

Try out the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, it has different gameplay than the mainline series but it has good story and character writing to make up for it
