It's actually pretty on-model, albeit with more defined musculature. Whoever the artist is, good on him for not falling into the "frog jaw begins at the center of the head" meme that many fall into. It might also be weird to see because it ain't common seeing Greninja without his tongue scarf, so it comes as a surprise.

The exact same stands sticking out are still in the game, but they are really big and defined just like in the official artwork. Artist in the OP made them much smaller, making it look like actual hair. Also they float and juggle making them look like a bubble, and reflect light in a similar way to a mass of water would. Not sure what they are, but the way artist drew them isn't necessarily 100% true to the actual model/artwork, and I'm pointing this out because everything else is surprisingly accurate.

Here's a fact. Not even Lucario is Pokemon icon, even after being in Smash for 10 years. As soon as the term "iconic" gets mentioned, genwun pops up. Only after many genwun Pokemon comes Lucario, and Greninja comes even after that. It isn't, and never will be among the most iconic. Greninja is already getting less popular, as soon as its role in anime ended. The fanart have slowed down considerably. It will never be an icon.

As weird as it is, you're considering "Icon" too much as a westerner thing.

You see, Greninja and Lucario among others are ABSOLUTELY Pokemon icons. But being a normie icon is different than being a Pokemon icon.

Back in the late 90's, Pokemon was the biggest, most normie thing imaginable, up to the point where the main Reps were on nearly all merchandise imaginable and even made it to the cover of the damn TIME Magazine. It was inescapable and omnipresent whether you were into the series or not.

Nowadays, Pokemon itself is definitely not omnipresent. Instead it is contained within an admittedly huge fandom, but hardly ever crosses over to your average Joe's life in any meaningful way. This means that pokemon that weren't present during the series' peak simply won't have as much of an effect, so it's useless to compare it in that regard.

Now if we're talking about people who at the very least are acquainted with pokemon, at least enough to know about the existance of Generations beyond the first, then you will find that Greninja and Lucario are instantly recognizable, even with some normie overlap. Therefore, yes, they actually are pokemon icons.
