i've played it but never beat them does that count? (i usually just got board somewhere after cerulean city)
>>32296232
Depends on what you mean by never played gen 1. Do you mean never playing the actual gen 1 games, or are we going to include FR/LG, which is a suitable replacement?

I think the special stat might be an important factor in why gen 1 pokemon were so different from gen 3.

Who /neverplayedgen1butwatchedtheorginalanimeinstead/ here?
>>32296334
Why? What does it accomplish? So I've seen the whole progress of this franchise from start to finish. And that's relevant because? You can find out that junk yourself much faster than I can explain it to you. I have personal input of what it was like back then? Okay, yes, you can't replicate that, but unless you're doing some kind of historical study, that means absolutely nothing. What relevance could anything I have to say possibly have? What!?
Everyone should at least finish RBY at least once. It's not that great now, and it's really unbalanced, but it's always worth a try for the historical aspect. It's not like say the original Metroid which is nearly unplayable, it's still a fun game.
>>32296390

>>32296404
Yeah, no. All the additions over the years make gen 1 irrelevant in the grand scheme of things other than where it started. In that aspect, it's exactly what you would expect: bare bones. I'd still say it's more worthwhile to play a later gen.
>>32296251
RB are a lot different from FRLG. Lack of natures and the special split as well as the crit mechanics made a lot of mons play differently. Not to mention playing genwun when it came out was a whole different beast than modern fandom.
>>32296419

Oh yeah, there's no denying it's bare bones as shit, and later gens are better, but it's always worth a go. To see where it all began.
Also, >I can't talk to anyone about my pokemon fetish now!
Ummm...then what is this place? What is any forum? You can't do it in real life? You don't have geeky friends? I'm pretty sure everyone in my age range has some kind of group of people who talk about video games and maybe still play them. I'd dare say it's perhaps more common than people realize.
>>32296232
/neverplayedgen2/ reporting in.
I've played everything besides gen2, ruby/sapphire and BW2.
Yellow is kinda shitty compared to r/b imo, simply because fuck pikachu, fuck fighting brock with it, fuck blue's jolteon, fuck lt. Surge's single raichu, fuck not being able to catch meowth, and fuck every single other change desu.
If you go gen1 play red/blue. They're okay.
>>32296432
This. A gen is not only remembered for it's games, but also what was happening during the public at the time. Shit, pokemon was everywhere. People weren't trying to hide the fact that they played it back in those days. Go to any convention and start singing the first opening and people will join you in masses.
>>32296449
>SUBJECTIVELY the worst opinion on this board

>>32296458
I guess it's just me that's not that interested in playing a game EXACTLY the way it was in the beginning. I haven't exactly hooked onto a long established franchise in a while, though, but I did realize that I don't need to play all the games to experience what it's like.
I haven't even finished a playthrough of FRLG. I don't like Kanto as a region or the level design present in it, ended up stopping right before Sabrina and have never made it farther than that.
Just not a fan of Kanto overall, but I can appreciate how different the games were. The freedom and lack of railroading in the game is very different and is most likely why I couldn't finish it, no drive to go on.
>>32296480
I think that's fair. That's kind of my stance on things like the original Metroid, which I tried a couple of times but couldn't stand.
>>32296482
how does FRLG lacks railroading? It's gym -> gym -> ... -> gym -> elite 4
>>32296242
I got to Rock Tunnel and gave up, it's just a worse FrLg.
>>32296377
I remember as a kid i didn't have a gameboy so i watched the anime and thought pokemon was supper cool and even played the tgc, but i never knew there was a video game unitl gen three. when my parents got me and my sister gbas and my sister borrowed leaf green from her boyfriend at the time.
>>32296520
You can tackle them in any order you want, compare that to bw where it's go here first and then do this or sm where you are constantly stopped.
>>32296377
>tfw got into the series through the ashnime
>>32296471
No. Objectively. Gen 1 are objectively the worst because they are old, buggy, and have generally worse mechanics than everything that came after.
>>32296520
it's more of the freedom of choosing which gyms you want to beat first instead of being forced to go in order.
>>32296461
Sorry to home in on one point among many, but wasn't Mankey available pre-Brock?
>>32296520
It's an exaggeration I've seen many times. There's at least two parts of the game where it gives you the choice of one of two routes you can take to reach the same destination. If having two lines instead of one is non-linear, then you're right. Gen 2 has only one instance of being able to choose which fork you want to take, but at least it leads to two different destinations. Gen 3 gives you a fork, but one leads nowhere and the other leads to progress. D/P had a similar fork to the one in gen 2, and then after that, the option becomes non-existent. It's a massive technicality, but it's hardly the herald of freedom it's made out to be. You still have to take the other route eventually, and it's limited to only a few things at a time. It's not even worth a second playthrough to do. Yes, it's there, but it's not as impressive as it's made out to be.
I'm going to Sevii Islands now, then I'll go back to beat the elite 4

They are probably fine games but I find gen 1 & 2 to be unplayable based on graphics and gameplay. FRLG are my favorite games and I love Kanto but the first 2 gens seem like a chore to play. Maybe one day I'll build up the courage.

That's me, never played them, not myself. I didn't have a Game Boy at the time, but I did play on my friends' Game Boys quite a bit.
I don't really have any inclination to play them on the 3DS virtual console either. They've aged really poorly. The only reason I would is for transferring a hidden ability Mewtwo just for novelty.
My first proper game was Pokemon Crystal.
>>32296232

About 70% of the board, I'd say.
90% if you change it to "started with gen 4 or later."
There are Pokémon fans alive today who've never played Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow on an original gameboy when Pokémania was in full effect
I genuinely feel sorry for those people. Those were honestly the best years of my life.
>>32297202
This. I used to fill notebooks with stuff like that back in the NES days. Because for many games, you kinda had to. Does that make them a bad game? Not necessarily. It was a different time. The internet didn't exist yet, and video games hadn't become a billion dollar industry yet. So major developers were allowed to take risks and make games that truly and actually didn't hold the players hand.

>>32296247
Yes. GF went out of their way to make FRLG as close to Gen 1 as possible. They even locked cross-gen evolutions to the post game and removed the time gimmick (making it impossible to get Espeon and Unbreon altogether).
Plus they have the Sevii Islands. Content every Pokémon player should experience.
>>32299869
Ah I see what you mean, they were speaking engrish. They may have been a tranlsated hack I guess though I can't see why anyone would go through the trouble of doing that when GF already translated the game

Nostalgia is a terrible disease that must be eradicated, as demonstrated by this autist.
I started with Gold, and some time later got Yellow too. To be honest, I just beat the Elite 4 once and never checked anything after it. I have to admit it was really fun.
That was way too long ago though
I like playing gen 1
>>32300490
I was in middle school during Gen I. That was my first experience with the game.
Then Pokemon Stadium came out, I reset my Blue and became a hardcore maniac about that game with a fresh file.
Fucking loved Stadium.

>LEGALLY
I finished LeafGreen for the first time yesterday. Back in the days I only beat the league and called it a day. I knew there was other stuff on the Sevii Islands but I was a lazy little shit and my team was underleveled so I just ignored the islands and ran around Kanto catching everything I could until I stopped playing the game.

I only started playing the games in 2007 when I was 12.
If you never played gen 1 you are not a pokemon fan. Pokemon exists today and existed for 20 years because of RBY.

Started with crystal, played half of yellow on an emulator before I lost my save, completed fire red once on a cart my dad got me off ebay for my birthday with a bunch of hacked mons/items on it so I basically started the game with everything already so it hardly counts.
>>32301230

>>32296390
you're so mad that you missed the peak of pokemon
>>32296536

>>32296419
I'm 22 and I had red version. Maybe not at launch but before GSC came out. Granted, I was too young to understand weaknesses.
>>32302199
I don't have anything positive to say about gen 1. The game and the competitive aspect was bad. But it had improved over the years. It's the start. If you don't know the beginning, you are not a fan.

Yeah, they're pretty good. FrLg are more replayable as games due to the cutscene abundance though.
