It either needs to be bulkier or have a Speed stat of 95 or something. In VGC it's a really nice Pokemon to have combined with Pokemon like Garchomp or Krookodile, and can check some good mons like Kartana, Celesteela, and Tapu Fini. It has speed control options and fantastic power, but can't use them without the Speed or the bulk to survive attacks or hit first.

So just like many other things, it's a cool concept executed poorly. It might be because Vikavolt was meant to be the garbage starting bug (in which case what were they smoking to make it evolve so late), but they made the regional bird super OP last gen so why not give Vikavolt good stats?

I guess it's about the way it subverts your expectations. It looks really cool, you encounter its first form early on, you're getting all excited, then it dawns on you.

As for Alakazam, you'd probably see more people complain about it if it wasn't so fucking old. Lots of players probably have a box or two full of the things on one of their old carts.

It's been ages, but I remember back in the day I didn't like the whole trade evo thing much either. Wasn't as bad as not being able to catch Farfetch'd in the wild, though.
