OS is the most iconic, as an inexperienced, cocky goofball who really means the best, with clear flaws that he develops out of. AG and DP Ash is the most well-rounded, having more experience and having grown out of his most egregious character flaws. XY and SM Ash are both pretty close to AG/DP Ash, but XY Ash dials down the goofball stat a bit too much while SM invests too much into it due to the more comedic nature of the show. BW Ash is a trainwreck attempt to recapture the iconic magic of OS Ash without realizing any of why it worked making a boring idiot character who has no reason to be so.

This is my headcanon about what happened to Ash after XY

If you're going to force SM to be canon as well, that Ash is a clone who's retarded thanks to the cloning process.

He's the most mature, and definitely the most skilled Ash, but overall OS and DP Ash were more enjoyable. I liked that he was the leader of the group for once.

Definitely better than the BW and SM trash, though, although that's hardly an accomplishment. About AG Ash, he was square in the middle.

The writers, producers, animators etc all get their orders from higher ups that dictate how it should go to best make it marketable. They don't have much to say in the really important decisions. Heck, the XY producer had to fight hard just to make Serena able to cut her hair which is stated in one of the interviews with him.

In terms of power level and skill, possibly. I still argue that DP Ash showed more strategy overall.

In terms of personality though, he's the most boring. I wish they would try to strike more of a balance between his OS personality and his more vanilla personalities from later seasons. XY went too far one way, and SM took it too far the other way. Early Misty really played off his personality well, before she was reduced to being background, but his current companions are all just super nice, which probably plays some part in it.

I don't understand this whole XY Ash had no personality thing. I really don't. He had the same personality as all other Ashs, with the annoying parts toned down heavily. His default emotion is still happiness, he still gets angry at Team Rocket and such, he love Pokemon and gets sparkling eyes for them, he still loves traveling and seeing new places, he still loves battles. He's literally the same.

The only differences I could tell were that he didn't scream loudly all the time. He still screamed, a lot, but not all the time. And he didn't make too many irrational decisions. He still did that, but less often. He was a lot more focused on winning the League this time. Still goofed off a lot, but that was always presented to be the thing on his mind. That, and because Bonnie was young and Serena thought of Ash as a God, and Shota was pretty much Ash's fan, Ash got to act like an adult figure for both of them, giving his thoughts to things and looking after them, acting like a role model at times. This hasn't happened before, because all other characters thought of Ash as a friend more than anything. Max had a few moments like this, but he was usually more knowledgeable than Ash.

Other than these small changes and add ions, Ash was the same he's been for years now.
