The symbol on the original hat was supposed to be a stylized L, for Pokemon League. The symbol on this new hat though isn't really recognizable as an L or anything else.

This is symbolic of the anime creators and their attempts at appealing to nostalgia. They sort of get what it looks like, but they don't understand the meaning to it. They can make an imitation of what the show used to be, but they can't get it right, it's uncanny and off. They want to use the show's legacy for leverage, but they don't respect that legacy and just do whatever because young kids will eat anything up. They want old fans to pay attention, but they don't care enough to get things right and make proper nostalgia bait, because using the movie as an ad for the newest Pokemon comes first.

It's more than a simple that a simple hat, it's a representation of much that is wrong with the Pokemon anime. It's pretty dumb looking.
