Stoutland just died of old age. It left Litten so it could die in isolation.

They have to leave a corpse. Otherwise how could one Pokemon prey on another Pokemon? A Sableye doesn't murder a Carbink to absorb its corpse dust.

Ghost types can be real ghosts, or they can be generic spirits/demonic creatures that might never have had a body (like Dusknoir's line), creatures that consume spirits (Chandelure line), or creatures with some sort of dominion over the dead (Oricorio).

Pokemon seems to take ghosts as being canon. There's the house on the way to Snowpoint, the old chateau, and the strange house near Lentimas. There's also Cubone's mother in gen one, and I'm sure other examples I'm forgetting. The dex doesn't present any of those examples as a tale except possibly honedge, I skipped over the ones where there was any implications of it being only a legend.

Think of it more like a type of reincarnation. They died and became for instance a Yamask which will live out its life and possibly evolve one day. I'm not sure how Snorunt fits in, but it might be that Glalie and Froslass were the original mons in that line following those accidents/deaths, and then gave rise to Snorunt through breeding.
