There was still a chance at Z happening after Volcanion was revealed, since they could've made a movie for a Gen VII mon the year afterwords like in Gen III. It was revealing Magearna and her being the true focus of the Volcanion movie that really sealed that Gen VI was over. Same could be said about revealing Mega Mewtwo, if XY hadn't already been announced.

Similarly, there's no Gen VIII Pokemon revealed yet, so there's a good chance at one last Gen VII game before Gen VIII gets announced next year, with a second SM movie focusing on a Gen VIII Pokemon.
