During Ash vs Clemont, for example, there's this one really awkward shot where Clemont is moving his arm around while he talks. Sun and Moon's animation isn't perfect, but it's far better than XY's animation.

Most TV anime have a focus on static shots created to look individually pleasant, but not to create necessarily good visual flow with an emphasis on characters looking on-model and detailed, this leads to a lot of shows where the animation for the most part consists of characters just standing arround and talking, with most of the actually good animators just working on one or two moments of each episode at most.

I like the Pokemon Sun and Moon anime because it's aesthetics defy that, it's like Kill la Kill, the show rarely stops moving even if it's only doing so a little, and when it does, it does so on purpose because the lack of movement is genuinely what fits the scene it's in the best, it's not just a case of having animation for the sake of animation, there's some genuine well directing to be found in the show, it's probably the best Pokemon season aesthetics-wise, it's the kind of show i wish i could see more of in Anime.

Sorry, what I meant is that Sun and Moons animation remains fluid outside and DURING battles. I figure it's naturally assumed that battles would have a lot of animation put into them. I think showing is better than simply telling so I'll post two examples, both of which take place outside of dedicated pokemon battle fights.

Here we have an X/Y example of a pokemon slapping the shit out of another pokemon.

Animation wise it's pretty stiff, with only a few frames of movement for qaugsire and Florges's head. There's no real power or impact behind those whips and the scene mostly relies on camera shaking to give any indication of something being hit.

"But he's enjoying being hit that's the joke!" Yeah, but there are ways of showing that without the animation being as stiff and rigid as they are here.

Right away you can tell there is IMPACT, with Steenee swinging her ENTIRE body into every swing with gusts of wing blowing out and the camera swinging back and forth to match her movement.

There is power behind her hits because every frame is a seperate drawing of full body movement to emphasize the arc of her slaps.
What's equally impressive here is that Steenee and Meowth each have different frame counts and are moving seperately from one another, with one doing the swinging and other reacting. This helps the scene feel more alive as both characters then feel like seperate living beings, rather than scripted choreographs.

Now imagine the two swapped with florges and Quagsire, with Florges slapping Quagsire back and forth and Quagsire looking to be in total bliss about it. The joke would still work, and in fact it'd be funnier because of the contrast between them would be even greater.
