The thing it's based on is variously depicted as a bovine (which does not necessarily mean 'cow',) and a big cat.

If you ask me, Absol was based on a mountain lion more than anything else. Its resemblance to a sphinx is definitely a coincidence, anyway. People just say it is one because they don't know what it is, and because it has a humanlike head, but cats generally have flat faces anyway.

It has some dog in it too, but I think it's intended to be cat/beast more than anything else.

Fug. Being weak to bullet punch would suck.
Dark/fighting would probably be the best so that absol resists bullet punch and is neutral to mach punch, but it wouldn't really make sense design wise.

Come to think of it, Absol can also fly with Z-Moves. It learns Aerial Ace via TM, so give it a Flyinium Z and it can fly with Supersonic Skystrike.
But I suppose there's the chance it technically isn't flying, and is just jumping really high.

Fun things about Absol

Absol can be encountered on Mt. Coronet (right as you're trying to stop Galactic from attempting to destroy the Universe) and can be encountered on Unova Route 13 in Black and White, which is near the Giant Chasm, which houses Kyurem and is attacked by Team Plasma 2 years later. In other words, Absol does appear at sites where disaster will appear, as the Dex stated.
In X & Y, Absol appears at Route 8. Doesn't sound like a case of foreshadowing, but this is the first route you enter in Coastal Kalos, where the Team Flare plot kicks off not long after.
In the original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire as well as the their remakes, Absol first shows up on Route 120, right before Team Magma/Aqua steal their orb and summon Groudon/Kyogre.
In Sun and Moon, Absol is catchable in the Tapu Village, not long before Team Skull kidnaps Lillie and Nebby for the Aether Foundation. Since Tapu Village is in ruins by the time you reach it, it likely also appeared before the residents there to warn of the village's impending destruction.
Absol is said to be quick to sense disasters but often too slow to save anyone. Its Speed stat is mediocre.
