Japan didn't care that Misty left, May's was more popular than her in both Japan and the west when AG was airing, hence the writers decision to make Misty's departure permanent instead of bringing her back like they did with Brock. The Contest episodes also became the most popular addition to the series right after she left, and as said besides Dawn's Contests arc, May's arc is still one of the most popular arc for a female companion in the series.

Likewise, May blatantly has one of the largest fanbases of all the main girls that came into the series. This is even aside from the fact that she's factually the most watched/viewed female lead of the series after Misty, simply because she was introduced 14 years ago back in 2002 when far more people were watching the series. You seriously cannot believe characters introducing in the 2010's are anywhere as watched or had a following as May did in the early 2000's. What on earth? Misty only appeared in 4 full AG episodes. She got the two Togetic episodes, then another 2 at Pallet when Ash returned from Hoenn. She was only in the last 1 minute of AG133, and it was basically just a preview to the next epsisode.

During the same BW season this flashback took place in, May was in both the BW ending theme holding hands and then in the final BW episode when Ash had a flashback remembering all his friends in the air. What difference does it make? Misty's scenes in the Charizard flashback are like 5 seconds long.

The majority of Charizard's episodes were during Kanto/Johto, it has nothing to do with who the travel companions at the time. The writers got rid of Misty almost 15 years ago now, do you really think they care about her much? Well yeah i made a mistake not explained why i think Serena is a stick with a ball like head.
If you see the proportions who manages XY excluding the battles and the Tripokalons all the characters have the classic OLM proportions who gives to the characters an awful big head with a poor and stick body.
In SM they manages (not in all frames) pretty well the propotions and made the characters more stylized.
Also the dress of lillie make him less flat.
