The only reason to have any sort of canon debates on this is purely for a hypothetical battle against an already established trainer, such as Gold/Ethan or Brendan, in a future game. Which will probably never happen, save for one sole instance.

The protagonist of Sun and Moon. Seeing as how they're the champion of Alola, they would have to be in the Pokemon world tournament. Hypothetically, however, they might not even make is as BW2 take place before Sun and Moon happen, therefore allowing Alolan representatives to not make it in, as they don't fully exist yet.
