I always thought Hilda had a boring outfit, but these cosplay drive home just how shit it is. Granted, it's a cosplay; it's meant to look bad, but at the very least, there are times when the costumes don't look bad. Yet somehow, all of these are pretty fucking bad.

I think the biggest problem is that they just aren't cosplaying as a character that would fit their appearance and physique. Even though Hilda/Hilbert and Calem/Serena are older than most player characters, these girls are still very obviously late teens or young adults and just don't fit the image of the character all that well.

Exactly, it's unavoidable when it comes to cosplay since so many popular characters are in their young teens. The "mainstream" anime characters like Ash and Misty are worse in that respect, since they're even more common but only 10.

I don't know, I get what you're trying to say and in the end people are free to cosplay whatever they want, but there are tons of older characters in the Pokemon franchise. I think the Flints a couple posts up are pretty top tier

Agreed, there are lots of popular options like N, Cynthia, Guzma and the majority of NPC's. They're far easier to pull off well if you're an older teen/young adult than the protagonists and younger characters.

I'm more bothered by the outfit, though. Yes, the ones wearing it don't fit the image of character, but the outfit itself is a different thing. I don't really have any problem with the Serena, anime Serena, May, Clerk or Leaf outfit. The Dawn outfit looks fine on top half, but the skirt part looks a bit jarring.
In HIldas' case, though, I find the outfits to be pretty shit design wise. I actually cannot imagine ANYONE looking good in those, and I have yet to see something that would prove me wrong.

Like I said, people will dress up as whatever they want and they have a right to do so, but we're discussing our opinions on whether we think it looks any good or not.
