How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games) to get 45 free packs
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.

>WHAT THEMEDECK SHOULD I BUY
Buy the fucking Incineroar one

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. Top Cut & other big trading companies will typically overprice cards, expect to get lower. Keep pack value in mind when trading.

I had a dream last night about a torkoal/torkoal gx combo that played like volcanion. Baby torkoal has a 1fire attack that does 30 and you attach 1 energy from the discard to the baby torkoal and a 3fire attack that does 90 and you move all energy attached to torkoal to your bench in any way you like. Torkoal gx has an ability to discard a fire energy and reduce all damage done to your active fire poke by 30 which stacks like steamup, then you have a 3fire attack that does 30× the fire energy on all your pokes and a 3fire gx attack that does 50× for each fire energy you discard off all your pokes
Did my dream recreate the volcanion powerhouse well? If it was in the same standard format as volcanion you could use damage reduction and steam up together
>>
>>32116173
some memers use a torkoal in volcanion as it is because of that paralysis chance.
>>
is day of the rake canon
>>
Did a league challenge today, my boy and I went 3-1 in our respective divisions. I was one of 4 Volcanion players... I was expecting more owls, but it was a lot of Volcanion, Darkrai, and Gardevoir.

League Cup next weekend, bigger prize pool. Not sure if I want to compete, desu. Might just help judge.

>>
>>32116508
We already have a fliptini in expanded. Shouldn't it be already played if it works?
>>
>>32116527
Probably not, the only two things they've banned were leagues ahead of fogp in terms of pure bullshit.

Granted one of the things they banned was 100% due to FOGP.
>>
>>32116554
expanded volc has too many other things going on that are way better than victini, namely blacksmiths which greatly accelerate how fast you can get your daddyvolc cycling online.
>>
>>32116527
Probably not. While it might be somewhat unfair, it's not as absurd as flat-out losing the game without being able to do anything (Shiftry) or essentially resetting everything but the board state and timer (Lysandre's Trump Card)
>>
>>32116522
Gardevoir, Primarina

>>32116587
>flat-out losing the game without being able to do anything
That's how most turn 1 item lock games go
>>
>>32117004
And if they ban FoGP then they can unban Shiftry, too.
>>
>>32117004
>>32117062
Trevenant's been doing this for literally 2 years is arguably less clunky and more consistent. Yet we've somehow managed.

Wally is not more consistent than a stadium and revitalizer.

>>32117734
Thought you were talking about old standart
>>
>>32117750
I think even in Standard before last year's rotation people were able to get Wally on turn 1 fairly consistently with Battle Compressor.
>>
How crazy was pre 2010 era standard compared to today's meta? I've been seeing archetypes that look like they are far weaker compared today, but did wackier plays, especially the trainer cards.
>>
>>32116522
Why are you here? Get out
>>
>>32117964
If I had to cut this game up into definitive eras, I'd say there's five major eras

Base era (Base-Gym Challenge)
Characterized by extremely fast draw, extremely powerful disruption and using energy efficient basics, if it couldn't attack with one attachment it was basically worthless except Blastoise was kind of a thing (but way, way worse than Haymaker). Hitmonchan/Electabuzz were star cards. Scyther and Magmar joined them in the upper echelons of the haymaker archetype. Ditto, Movie promo Mewtwo, Dodrio, Muk, and a few other pokemon became tech cards over time. Wigglytuff and Blastoise were the only evolutions that really saw play but were generally considered weak to haymaker

Neo era (Neo Genesis to Expedition or so)
This was the first 'rotation' that removed base set1/2 as well as fossil and jungle, removing the Haymaker deck as well as most of the retardedly broken trainers from base. Characterized by coinflip bullshit. Really, it was awful. Pichu and Cleffa were both common, and had an ability where you had to flip a coin to successfully attack them. Cleffa was kind of the Shaymeme of the set. Sneasel became the first card to be banned for being too broken (could do 140 damage on turn 2 back when 'big basics' had like 60-80hp). Slowking was the second (translation fail made its poke power bench playable, made your opponent flip a coin every time they played a trainer and it was stackable). Slowking/Dark Ampharos was the most miserable deck to play against ever. Feraligatr was a good card and enjoyable to play.

E-Reader era
Game starts to look more modern, the differentiation between supporters and trainers is introduced. Scizor/Furret was big at the start of the era, but I quit after Skyridge so I don't know that much about how the game was for those early Nintendo years other than that the first -ex cards dropped. cont..
>>
>>32118625

>Riptide Feraligatr
>Enjoyable to play when it was borderline T0 and almost feels like solitaire with Misty's Wrath and Trash Exchange
>>
>>32118625
Gen 4 era
Gen 4 had the craziest shit, it's really hard for me to characterize it, but there was so much just outright janky shit being played. Metal and dark energies finally became basic energies. Poison types switched from grass to psychic type cards. Uxie and Claydol were the draw pokemon. Draw supporters were comparatively weak, shuffle support got really good with PONT in HGSS. Uxie was literally better than Shaymemes. HGSS introduced a lot of cool shit like Primes.

The meta was actually slower despite Uxie being better draw support than Shaymin, and Claydol being better than Octillery. In fact most decks ran both of these, while today nobody uses Octillery because taking two turns to get it out is considered too slow.

BW on
The introduction of Juniper and rebirth of pokemon EX gave us a return, in some ways, to base era style play. Blazingly fast draw, super strong basics, no time for that evolving shit.
>>
>>32118867
>almost feels like solitaire

To be fair, SP Pokemon was the starting point of Big Basic's return. However there were enough good evolutions to keep them in check

>I play plume lock unironically

>>
>>32118625

To add on to this wonderful anon's post -

Gen 3 had both slow death by spreading damange counters (Desert Ruins, Cursed Stone, Toxic Nidoqueen, Holon Raichu) andone-shoting a pokemon, often a support pokemon (Lugia EX, Steelix Ex, Blaziken Ex, Weezing). Dedicated search was very strong in this era (Pidgeot, Magarcgo, various specialties like Team Rocket/Magma/Holon) as was trying to disrupt the other player's search abilitiesy/trainers (Battle Frontier, Medicham Ex, Magnetric + Mew EX). Many decks ran 4 stadiums to keep the adventagous stadium in their favor. Early leads were very shake due to the strength of comeback cards (Rocket's Admin, POW, Scramble Energy).
>>
>>32118625
Tell me more about neogenesis-the start of expedition. I'm playing in that era on tcgone but Crobat/Umbreon stomps my shit out.
>>
>>32118625
Thank you for the insight. As a person who started competitively in BW, these were fun to read.
>>
>>32119158
Just play Feraligatr/Parasect my dude. it's literally the only deck I played after Sneasel was banned. I never even got a full playset of those sadly, I do have 3 of the shit ones they introduced in discovery or revelations (fuck if I can remember what set that was in) though.

If you're not playing with Aquapolis/Skyridge you don't even really need to deal with SMT. I don't even remember crobat/umbreon being a thing honestly, probably because I could play that deck without seeing what the opponent was even doing and still win ~80% of the time.

>>
>>32120738
From reading it seems as though youre complaining that theyre greedy for limiting the amount of free stuff you can get no matter how much you play. From that it worked in my head that you are maxed out on prize wheel/wins and you want to play more. If thats not what you meant i got no idea
>>
>>32120756
You spin a wheel every win so that you have a chance to simply land on a prize that you've already claimed. At least they could remove the prize spaces that are already claimed so you don't feel ripped off for winning.

Yeah, this is true unfortunately. I don't get why people are so scummy about that. PTCGO packs have essentially negligible value and so the only reason codes are given out is so that physical players can vicariously open their online packs; yet people still steal them

>>32121268

If no pulls are posted anon, you could just email codes to people, rather than posting in the thread. I imagine you're more likely to see pulls that way.

draw engines look virtually identical deck to deck especially in standard. The one card that grass gets is revitalizer.

There is no good energy acceleration card for steel in standard, bronzong PHF is your boy in expanded. Lunala can kind of work as psychic acceleration but it's only pseudo-acceleration in that all of the energies have to be attached prior. Lunala can also move rainbow and mystery energies.

I don't know, does Shaymin-EX get rotated this year?
>>
>>32123860
99% chance. But that's 6 months off, we don't even really know what the big money card will be at rotation, we have Guardians coming and then SM3. The only card we know is in SM3 is Olivia, probably Necrozma-GX and Ho-oh-GX too.
>>
Newfag here. I wanted to start playing TCG competitively but rotation has me concerned that my cards wont be worth it if I buy older sets.

So clarify for me please. Standard is all editions from Clash to SM? And is expanded everything? I heard some card shops play a tossup of standard and expanded.

ATM I have only bought SM cards and have almost completed the set.
>>
>>32124077
Standard: Currently Primal Clash onwards (Rotates once a year.)
Expanded: Black & White onwards
Legacy: HGSS & BW sets only
>>
>>32124097

Ok just wanted to know because the pastebin says Roaring Skies is more valuable ATM but I dont wanna get a bunch of cards that will be deprecated in 6-12 months.

Im guessing Break will be good for another year or so?
>>
>>32124250
Most people are figuring that BREAKthrough will be the rotation cutoff but there is no guarantee of that.

Also just because cards rotate into expanded doesn't necessarily reduce their value. Good cards like shaymin in particular tend to appreciate falling a sharp drop upon rotation.

Shaymin's currently worth like 50 value. I expect it to drop to 20-30 value for the first week or two after rotation, but over the next few years it will increase in value unless there is a better set up pokemon introduced (unlikely).

Also the pastebin is a bit out of date, early xy packs are already rising, FCO isn't evo tier in terms of value atm either. PLF pack value fucking plummeted because of the holo changes, the SM ultras are drawing blingfags in like moths to a flame, even though the PLF version is still rarer.

ROS, NVI and HST are the trifecta of high value packs atm.
>>

>>
>>32124097

When is rotation usually? August?
>>
>>32124722
Deffo start collecting, do not expect reprints, a lot of staples are staying around for at least another year or two since it's extremely unlikely that all xy sets are rotating and Sycamore is getting a new promo art so he'll be legal until Evolutions rotates.

The money cards that are rotating into expanded are VS Seeker and Shaymin-EX. And again, if you ever want to play expanded, you will need those guaranteed unless they print something better. I think it's a newbie mistake to even worry about rotations into expanded. Worry about new cards making your old cards obsolete, that's what kills their value on the long term.

Rotation into unsupported formats like legacy or unlimited is the other way to kill a card's value, so if anything you should worry about the values of early BW stuff, but not for another year or two at least and possibly never. Some people believe that TPCI just wants to make expanded into a less retarded unlimited using BW as the baseline.

Btw what staples do you suggest? Im thinking fogp and revitalizer at least
>>
>>32125213
i wouldn't really call those staple cards except for grass decks. Staples are more like every deck runs it (shaymin, sycamore, lysandre, n, vs seeker, ultras, common tech cards like parallel city, delinquent, olympia). After that comes situational cards like stadiums other than parallel city, situational supporters like skyla and whatnot, items like level balls, dive balls, revitalizers.

Aside from Shaymin and VS seeker though, the staple cards in this game are mostly cheap. You'll spend a bunch the first few times you buy big lots of staples but once you have those, each successive deck is cheaper to build.
>>
>>32124963
plus you cant really go anywhere past online in online only. With real cards you can actually go to local events or even just casual stuff but in real life and get awarded maybe even money or more packs. Real better than online imo

Confused on the best ways to complete a set. Unknowingly bought the Sun/Moon elite trainer boxes and the 3 Sun/Moon starter decks thinking they were all just packs.
I'm currently looking at Derium's Pokemon for booster boxes but I don't want to have too much excess cards.

How many packs should I open per set before I start buying individual cards?

Probably because the game's popularity waned after first rotation until it began to pick back up again in late BW/early XY era.

Home come Nest Ball isn't used more often?
I only really see it used in Monkey meme decks.

I can understand it not being useful to for cards with abilities like Shay and Hoopa.

Is it because putting cards in the discard is worth it for future use like VS Seeker for trainers or Mega Turbo for energy?
>>
>>32127922

And don't forget the most important part, that Ultra Ball lets you fetch anything from the deck. Mind you Nest Ball can be useful in decks that needs to fill up the Bench as quickly as possible, it is not as powerful as Ultra Ball since there are less restrictions on what you can search and the added "utility"
>>
>>32127922
>I can understand it not being useful to for cards with abilities like Shay and Hoopa.

>When you play this Pokémon from your hand onto your Bench
Those cards don't work when played straight from your deck

It could be more useful with Darkrai decks
>>
>>32127922
It's just in this weird place where in most decks, when you want more search cards than your token 4 ultras, you prefer either level or dive balls. Dive balls are just outright better when you're running a water box and level balls are better for decks that need to search low HP evolutions (raikou, vileplume lock variants).

Decks that run EX attackers usually have no issues at all finding pokemon with hoopa, and non-EX decks other than Passimian (namely Rainbow Road and Raikou) just don't benefit much from the card.

Nest ball only works really well for non-ex basic swarm decks, and Passimian is the only deck that really meets that definition atm.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the thought of thinning out the deck quickly in Rainbow Road decks seems to be beneficial. It might not be a 4 of due to Ultra Ball into Hoopa EX for Bandit Ring shenanigans but it is still not bad to fetch out Xerneas and other small Basics

You want Xerneas in your deck, you only want one active and one on your bench at any given time and you don't want them in your hand until you need them.

Is this card a shitty meme? Wouldn't it be impossible to rely on consistently because you never know the type of energy your opponents pokemon will use unless you know the person you're playing?
>>
>>32128059
It's pretty bad but it's your first deck, at least with Glaceon you can cheese some wins with the protection. I'd dump the Tiernos for literally anything, that card is terrible. Maybe a super rod or two, some elixirs, anything that isn't that card.

Lapras GX aren't expensive either, keep an eye on them. I'd also include 1-2 Ninja Boys as a way to put an Articuno in play for extra prizes on kills you set up with Glaceon, will allow you to shave off a turn on some games that will protect you from that N to 1.

>>32128076

I'd try squeeze in a Regice or two. Also get rid of a couple of nest balls and one rough seas for some Max Elixir if you have it. If you're adding in some max elixir I'd get rid of some of those special water energies too. Try and trade for some VS seeker if you can. If you do add some VS seeker you don't need that many Lysandre, I'd maybe swap them out for a Kukui.

An escape rope would do good, and some tools like fighting fury belt/poison barb.

With that you'd have an okay waterbox to start playing with.

Best advice is to ignore all advice in this general just in general. Just throw a deck together, the elo will keep you matched against decks of similar standard. Just save your tournament tickets until you have a deck you are confident can at least get past the first round.

When I started I got by on a Gengar/Wobbuffet deck that was far from tiered, and an energy mill malamar creation. Both won me plenty of packs and now I have the cards for a build for every meta deck.

>Ability - Aero Trail: When you play this Pokémon from your hand onto your Bench, you may move any number of Lightning Energy attached to your Pokémon to this Pokémon. If you do, switch this Pokémon with your Active Pokémon.

>LLC - Sky-high Claws: 130

>LLC - Tapu Thunder GX:
This attack does 50 damage times the amount of Energy attached to all of your opponent's Pokémon.

Pretty good in a format where it isn't threatened to be one shot, since it'll win trades with the help of it's stadium and it's naturally fast because of its ability. It'll hardly do shit if it's FFB is being blown off and Darkrai is hitting it for 200 damage a turn.

Help I think just have bad luck when i draw or my deck is shit
>>
>>32129304

>bad luck when i draw

I think this may be due to a lack of consistency cards/draw Supporters. Competitive decks are built to be consistent and to implement their strategies almost every game (unless you're facing Vileplume lock). You don't really want to be relying on luck when you draw; you always want to have cards which will help you get what you need.

Could you post a list/picture of the cards in your deck so more specific advice can be given?

>builds very first deck
>is fairy type

In general, it's not a great idea just to build around a type. You want to focus on 1 or 2 main Pokemon, with a specific winning strategy. If you are running multiple evolution lines, this could possibly explain your bad luck when drawing.

This.

For most TCG's, deciding what your wincon is, then describing multiple methods to achieve that wincon, is the basic strategy for competition play.

unless the promo cards are good or it's a rotated set you want cards from it's seldom a good play to buy those.

I bought 3 of the PLB bundles when they were in the shop a few weeks ago though, picked up a FA Jirachi-EX, SR shiny Virizion, 2 silver bangles and a scoop up cyclone from them. Sadly Guardians is rendering Jirachi and silver bangles obsolete and the shiny virizion is more of a collector's item and has little use in the digital game.
>>
>>32130379
Neat. I just want something to spend my coins on so I usually buy the promos.
>>
>>32130477
Save for Guardians, that set has so many fucking great cards in it. It's the new ROS.

By the time Guardians drops I should have enough tokens to buy 2 booster boxes worth of no trade packs. Even if I don't get the god pull of Lele most people will want a playset of choice bands and some other cool stuff. Even a lot of the mediocre rares in the set look at least mildly interesting compared to the utter dogshit that most non-GX rares were in SM.

Budget decks rely on Octillery and Oranguru. They're not as good as Shaymin but you get what you pay for.

Orangurus can be gotten from the Incineroar deck.

Round description is poorly worded. What's it refering to? It could be refering to all the cards I have in my collection that have the attack (obviously this isn't the intention).

Does it refer to all the pokemon in my deck that have the attack? So all the pokemon in my hand, discard, and on the field?

Or does it just refer to the pokemon in play?
>>
>>32130600
Yeah, the no-trade boosters. It's good to be able to buy a shitload of them, see what pulls you get, then you can spend trade value to fill the holes instead of trading first then getting a shitload of pulls you already had.

And as for that attack, it's self explanitory. If you only need to claim one more prize, you use that attack then game's over, you win.

>>32130604
It's impossible to build a good deck without shaymin, decent decks you can definitely build. You'll typically want to build a shallower deck, acro bikes and trainers' mails let you basically have less cards in your deck which increases the probability you get cards you need when you need them. Octillery is slower and less consistent than shaymin but usually gets you more cards over a long game.

Some memedecks like typhlosion and haxorus prefer talonflame for the precision draws it offers you (though these are disruptable). Some decks like stand alone lucario don't even use draw support (but are always less consistent because of it)
>>
>>32130743
It's your pokemon in play, it doesn't say benched pokemon because your active is included. Those attacks all refer to pokemon in play unless they specify otherwise (ie in discard pile like bee revenge)
>>
>>32130780
Okay, thanks.

>>32130758
The slowking move just seems unfair.
>>
>>32130758
>>32130737
So if I have the cards to build a popular deck (Volcanion, Yveltal, etc.), I can just replace Shaymin with Octillery/Oranguru and be a little worse off for it?
>>
>>32130758
>If you only need to claim one more prize, you use that attack then game's over, you win.
The card reads like you win if YOU only have one prize card left.
>>
>>32130871
basically yeah, it's slower and takes more space in the deck (you need to run it 2-2 instead of just 2) but it will work reasonably well.

>>32130882
Your prize cards are the ones on your side of the board, from your deck, the cards your opponent draws from from KOing your pokemon are his/her prizes, not yours.

That slowbro is basically useless, might be reasonably okay if it was DCE instead of CCC but being a stage 1 and needing two attachments for that play is kind of shit. I've literally never seen it played, I've seen the slowking from the same set much more often (aka like 2 times total)

This anon is right, I started with a deck that used Lugia and the bird trio, Electrode and Whimsicott. It was really fun and my opponents would be on similar level, I was able to get about 1500 points within the 10 days there were still left till the ladder restarted.

Even now, I play Volcanion/Ninetales Break without any Shaymemes and was able to win a couple of standard events.

>>32133732
strongest is subjective. I'm of the opinion that decidueye is actually not the best plumelock support, Lurantis didn't get as many top 8 spots but had far more top 32 spots across all events since SM. Being able to run a much thinner pokemon line combined with the ease that Lurantis sets itself up allows you to outlast the enemy.

The tier list in the pastebin is kind of accurate except the plume lock archetypes are probably tier 1/2 now instead of 2/3 as people have refined their lists. This is my current favorite expanded list atm. I can turn 1 item lock almost every game with this list with battle compressor/revitalizer/extra shaymemes to search vileplume pieces. 4 AZ lets you recover your injured Lurantises, with FOGP you can play them the same turn then use flower supply to pull the discarded energies back on to an active Lurantis. If I were to go to an event I would absolutely bring this deck.

My WR when moving first is 85% in the past 50 games. Moving second is a little sketchier but still over 60%.

Another good deck atm is Raikou/Eels but that deck gets a LOT better in May since it'll gain even more beef with aether paradise, Koko as a way to deal with mega mewtwo and field blower to deal with garb cancer.

Just on a quick glance I'd bet the reason you only hit the T1 60% of the time is due to clogging. You have far too many non-disposable cards. e.g. the Archies Blastoise that won worlds had 6 supporters and 2 stadia. You have 12 and 4. That is a shitload of cards that can get stuck in your hand and not allow you get that T1 Archie. An archie build is quite atypical in that you need to trim the supporter count to the bare essentials. Sacrifice that draw power all in the name of getting the Archie out.

You're also cutting it close on cards that will either cut your hand size down by being disposable themselves, or by putting other cards from hand to discard. Superior Energy Retrieval, Acro Bike, Trainers Mail, Random Receiver, Computer Search, even Maintenance. Lose half the support & Stadiums and replace with some of these.

You don't build around a type, you build around an attacker or two and its/their support squad.
The only good metal out is Solgaleo GX, goes well with Lurantis GX.

It's bullshit probably meant to support buying packs. If you could just test a deck and know which singles to get, would you ever bother with random packs?

1)
I think you made some random link to the installer as mentioned by the "PokemonInstaller.msi" in the error message.
Try to reinstall. It should just install by default in C:\Users\Tarra\AppData\Roaming\Pokémon Trading Card Game Online\PokemonTradingCardGameOnline and give you a shortcut on your desktop.

Additionally, if you install successfully on some computer and just copy the entire folder over you can just play it from there.
Protip: type %appdata% into the address bar in the file explorer to quickly access the folder.
2)
It's cause the devs are shit and they want you only to be able to play on a tablet/whatever device they feel comfortable with. I had the same problem.

Passimian can win.

He deserved to lose.

i tried the first thing; reinstalling it didn't work. It gave me the same error message. Which I'm trying to delete now completely. Normally, I figured if you delete the folder, it deletes everything. I assume there's a 2nd folder that holds everything else like a register edit?

if only there was a new to tcg guide in the OP about why it's a horrible idea to build around a type and why you should be building around a specific attacker or attack. Oh wait
>http://i.imgur.com/HoY1IaG.jpg

metal support sucks right now. it's special energy doesn't do enough to justify running it (-10 damage). it's stadium is decent (blocks special conditions) but is for Expanded format only. it's best support card (metal links bronzong) is also expanded only.
There are some good Solgaleo decks. Also some good Scizor decks. It gets murdered by Volcanion which is still pretty popular. If you have your heart set on metal your best bet is to play expanded. Google for Genesect/Bronzong decks.

If you're okay with two-shotting things and memeing, you can play Scizor-EX/Solgaleo-GX. Gale Thrust niggas all day.

>>32137437
Yeah probably some registry, maybe not even pokemon related. I just googled some shit with your error message. Try deleting the pokemon registries first though.

If you want a bandaid solution though, you could just copy paste a successful installation over onto your pc.

I don't play steel decks but the steel type attack sound is dope.
>>
>>32135907

Dont have those, otherwise shaymin would definitely be in there. And why Magma?
>>
>>32137737
To damage your carps.
>>
>>32137390
Well I can build a deck that has cards I don't have and it automatically puts the cards in my "wanted" list.

Why would he even care about losing a single energy when he's hitting for weakness? The requisite 2 energy to attack + FFB is enough to OHKO a Gengar.

>He deserved to lose.

Exactly.
