What makes something a Pokémon when it ordinarily wouldn't be?

Why can I catch a Pikachu but not an ordinary mouse?

Why can I catch a Houndoom but not an ordinary dog? And how and why are there even dogs that breathe fire?

Mew is said to be the ancestor of all Pokémon. But if what makes a Pokémon a Pokémon is that it has powers and can be caught, then wouldn't Silph Co. be the ones to decide what the ancestor of all Pokémon is? If they wanted to include Darwinian siblings of Mew, they could have invented Pokéballs that could contain the beings one level of ancestry farther. Such as cats, presumably, since Mew looks like one. Is it just that Mew was the first animal with supernatural powers that was ever discovered by a civilization sufficiently advanced to classify and control it (i.e. Kanto)? Or were Pokéballs invented for more common Pokémon, and when Mew was discovered, it was declared the ancestor of all Pokémon because it happened to be the most ancestral being that could be captured in a Pokéball as the technology was formulated at the time, where its own ancestors and sibling species couldn't?

There are seven (?) world-famous researchers studying Pokémon. Why have none of them tackled this question that seems to be fundamental to the study? They all just seem interested in cataloguing discovered species and details thereof. Isn't this what professors are supposed to do: get in there and answer the big questions?

Speaking of which, if they do research for a living and aren't professionally involved in educating the youth, what makes them professors and not doctors?

Thoughts, /vp/?

So? I am in fact, but it's still an important question for the franchise to address.

Hmm, yes. Interesting.

Prof. Oak has a dog.
>>
>>32098597
No it isn't. Pokemon ARE animals, regular dogs and mice don't exist in the Pokemon world.

Why should I care?

There are only Pokemon in the Pokemon universe. That, and humans.

Doesn't explain non-sentient rocks or grass/trees, though. All plants are living organisms, etc.

Lastly, do Microbial pokemon exist? is Pokerus a Pokemon?

>No it isn't. Pokemon ARE animals, regular dogs and mice don't exist in the Pokemon world.
Why not, then? What happened to them, and why are there now Pokémon instead? Clearly primates still exist
>>
>>32098659
>Lastly, do Microbial pokemon exist?
There are definitely at least two, but they're both quite enormous and intelligent for microbes.
>Ditto
>Deoxys

Pokemon have infinity energy or z power in them or something.
Regular objects can be caught in pokeballs if the anime is to be believed. Also, depending on your interpretation item pickups in the games are in pokeballs.
Humans can't be captured in pokeballs because they can't be turned into energy, probably has to do with the whole infinity energy/z power thing.
Real animals exist in the Pokemon world but they are outcompeted by Pokemon.
>>
>>32098662
>Why not, then?
Because it's a fucking fantasy world you autist. Pokemon exist as the animals of the PokeWorld. That's it.
>>
>>32098659
Pokerus is a microbe that infects Pokemon, so it itself must be one as well.
>>
>>32098597
It's actually not. Is a question the franchise sistematically chooses to avoid, if anything.

Getting balls deep into trying to explain or fill up their own acumulated lore-holes is not proffitable and the majority of the questions that make up these holes are of little to no concern to their target demographic, children.

It'd be interesting to know all the details? yes. Would attempting to solidify and consistently explain their whole lore put the pokemon franchise even more up its own ass? probably, and this is why they just carry forward and avoid getting involved with fundamental questions they know they'll just mess up if they try to.
>>
>>32098699
>infinity energy
This explains a lot of things.

1) If Pokemon possess and can harness infinite energy, that explains why no one in the Pokemon world is going hungry.

2) It explains why no one seems to have or need a real job. The nurses work for free, and I'd assume the officers work for free since they seem to have no superiors and be the full extent of the Pokemon world's governing body, and the professors seem to do their work for the love of knowledge. The mart owners obviously want to take your money, but there doesn't seem to be anything to use money for except to buy stuff from marts, so mart owners are probably just trainers who make a habit of finding a lot of stuff on their journeys, and want to trade it with other trainers, but need an objective and consistent way to quantify its value (hence money existing).

3) It explains why everyone has time to do nothing but travel the world and train their Pokemon.

4) It explains why Palkia and Dialga need to exist. Infinite energy has infinite mass, and infinite mass imposes an infinite strain on the fabric of spacetime. Arceus needed equally infinite metaphysical tensile forces to "hold up" his world and prevent everything from collapsing into an enormous black hole -- or, in this case, descending into Giratina's realm, I guess???? (This would also explain why Pokemon aren't physically impossible to pick up and carry and don't suck in everything around them at the speed of light)
>>
Or what if:
>Ditto is the ancestor of Mew, but is also the ancestor of all other living things that aren't Pokemon, e.g. grass, trees, human beings
>Even though Ditto is indirectly the ancestor of all Pokemon, Mew is more correctly said to be the ancestor of all Pokemon (excluding Ditto) because it's the ancestor of all Pokemon *and nothing else*
>>
>>32098567
Type energy. It allows a Pokemon to use moves, make their nonsensical biologies work, and make Poke balls able to catch them.
According to the information introduced in the games and anime, humans seem to at least have the ability to use Psychic type energies.

Pokémon is basically just the universe's most common word for animal.

>>32098659
Non-sentient plants are just a separate Kingdom from grass-type pokémon. Grass-types are just animals with certain plant-like features. Kinda like how the platypus is a mammal even if it has bird-like features. Microbes are also in separate kingdoms from pokémon. Rock-type pokémon are animals with high concentrations of minerals in their bodies.

>>32098567
"Mouse" and "Dog" are probably just the equivalent to taxonomic classifications. Houndoom and Stoutland would both be considered dogs just like how domestic dogs and foxes are both considered canines.
>>
>>32098567
Here's a thought. This stuff was never fully thought out when it was first created and very carefully conveniently ignored ever since. Don't think too hard.
>>
OP, literally no one thinks about this shit except manchildren.

Children don't think about it because they're stupid.

Men don't think about it because they don't play Pokemon.

You have to be some "special" mix of the two to ask questions like this
