Honestly, this current setup of mostly character focus episode is a good idea. We know Ash himself gets reset every season but his companion's development actually sticks. Shifting all the development to them is pretty brilliant move. The execution is still a bit rough around the edges, but it is a step forward in the right direction.

SM, even if filler, is one of those shows you'll want to watch every episode is for events that happen down the line.

This isn't your everyday Pokemon series, the world building in Alola makes the region feel like it's not just a town of the day, but an Island that's alive.

But you only get that if you watch each episode. This series is about Ash and his friends, if you skip episodes that expand on his friends relationships with him then why bother watching at all?

People say that you could skip the pancake episode if you wanted, but the end of that episode ties in with the episode after it and gets referenced later on.

Don't skip SM episodes, you'll regret it.

You can skip the pancake episode easily cause the next episode just starts right where it ended so you still see the same thing happen. It's not important.

Nothing feels "alive" in this series. Everything is just far too leisurely and boring with no sort of interesting goals or stakes happening. It's rather dull. Not bad or terrible or anything, just dull.

If you're watching Sun & Moon just to have a silly, carefree and kind of funny experience to kill some time, then I'd say it's a great anime. However, if you're watching Sun & Moon for a Pokemon anime in the sense of what one is supposed to be and always has been, you'd honestly be better off waiting for Gen 8.

That, or rewatching any of the old seasons. Even Johto and Best Wishes.

That said, Sun & Moon can still be enjoyable. Just not...satisfying or fulfilling.
