It's not like the story actually need Pokémon Amie. Look every other Gens - and every single of them have the story better than the one from Gen 6, when Amie was introduced - they don't have Amie.

Amie is essentially useless to enjoy the game. It is strictly necessary only to evolve Eevee into Sylveon. And even that can be rearranged, since they did it with Feebas evolution method.
