Why was this game so good?

It was a much better fight than the bitter cold, even though otherwise it was a more boring rehash of it.

That NEE NEEEEEE at the beginning do the dark matter theme sends shivers down my spine, I love how it suddenly comes out of this despairing texture. Best boss theme of any Pokemon game.
