Pokemon has always been shit if you're playing it solely for the singleplayer
If you're looking for a good singleplayer campaign, this is the wrong series for you, go play another RPG series like Final Fantasy. Pokemon is about the multiplayer.

Normalfags are the only ones that give a shit about the singleplayer.
In terms of singleplayer, Pokemon has always been way behind other RPGs.
The multiplayer stuff (battling and trading) is all this series has going for it.
If it didn't have that, it would have died a long time ago.
