OP here. Now that I think of it, I always thought Sp. Def was linked to being shrewd, or cynical. Probably solely due to Tentacruel.

It's a good question, my take is that while a high defense means it has a sturdy body to withstand physical hits, a high special defense means its body has an adaptative composition that makes it more tolerant to a wide arrange of effects such as drastic temperature changes, corrosion, etc...

I think sp.df means a strong, composite mind, like someone who meditates.
Sp.attack on the other hand is high intellect turned into raw power.

"Mental Resilience" which can be afforded by being shrewd or by being dense. Meditation and reflection will remove negative mental vibes as much as giving yourself amnesia will. As long as negative ideas aren't effective, you're more likely to shrug off a special attack.

Gyarados and Milotic are both mystical creatures, so the special defense is kinda like a magical aura. Both are frail fishes though which is why their physical defenses are on the lower side. Still have scales so not that low.

Generally, though there are exceptions like Excadrill and Amoongus, which are both tiny.

Special Defense is an odd one. There's shit like Lugia, Araquanid, Gallade, Slowking, Mantine, Umbreon, Ledian, Cryogonal. There's little consistency between them.

Also worth noting is that barely anything in Unova is Specially Defensive, for some reason. Especially considering the dex size.
