Rushed recycled contest arc
No chemistry between the cast, everyone just nice to each other all the time
No conflict at all until XYZ, Ash barely struggled at all
Shit fucking rivals, no tension at all against Shota, and no character conflict with Alain
Ash-Greninja asspulled out of nowhere, no basis in the games, never properly explained, and didn't amount to anything. Intro promised some great inner conflict which turned into Ash moping in the forest for five minutes. Fucked up the hero's journey structure, ended up never winning despite overcoming the hurdles that made him lose, which made the entire thing a waste of time, and left a shitstain on the series by being shoehorned into the games
Shoddily written, boring max 3v3 battles, all flash and no substance

I don't get your "no conflict" meaning. There's no conflict in SM either. There's no conflict in most seasons besides with Paul in DP. Arguing with his female companion once in a while isn't conflict either.

The rivals in XY again, are no better or worse than any season outside of DP. OS had Gary who barely showed up, AG had nobody for Ash, and BW's main rivals for Ash were awful.

The battles themselves in XY were also some of the best of the series. Unless you've truly forgot how poor most OS battles were, AG's were fairly average, and DP had great battles but not as good animation.

There was more episodic conflict in OS, and not just team rocket, especially because Ash was generally the underdog and not just nice to everyone. Charizard counts as conflict as well.

It's not about how much each character shows up so much as how much it means when they do show up. Ash's battle with Gary had way more emotional drive than anything in XY. Same when Charizard would suddenly battle before Ash tamed him. And BW's rivals were good, they just didn't go anywhere in the league.

XY's battles were just flashy. The best written battle was honestly Ash vs Viola because of all the subtext. Even Wulfric wasn't as satisfying because he didn't use hail with Avalugg, and Talonflame beat him despite not really being stronger, and Hawlucha could have just taken out Abomasnow again before he mega'd. Messy writing. The rest were mostly just clashing and occasional asspulls like Trick Room break, and Clemont was pretty much entirely ruined by Goodra. Behind all the pizzaz the battles were actually quite weak.

This is bizarre nitpicking since nearly all of Ash's battles in the anime play out the same way. You must really not remember what Ash's older Gym battlers were like in prior seasons. They would all play out the same way with Ash at a disadvantage at first with the Gym leader beating the crap out of him, and then Ash would pull a crazy out of nowhere strategy to suddenly start winning.

Nearly all of Ash's wins in the entire series are "come from behind wins" where his pokemon suddenly get power boosts no matter how much damage they take and then he wins.

Sure he was more fleshed out in and of himself, but none of that played into their rivalry. And at least against Tobias Ash went down in a blaze of glory, doing better than anyone else did, using his B team, and would have even won if he sent his mons out in a different order, based on Tobias's comments. Aside from Serena's purposely slow start, XYZ basically continued what XY set up. The tripokalon's were never anything more than idol shows and waifu's, I don't know what people expected more than that.

Ash/Alan was a decent rivalry. I'm not saying its better than Ash/Paul or even Ash/Gary in terms of character interaction, but it was serviceable and if Ash won nobody would be complaining.

Alan was a type of rival Ash never had before. An older more experienced trainer who got tricked by a villain into helping him and he battled and trained with Ash along the way. Ash and Gary only battled once in the entire OS before the league.

As for the rivals? They used the same 3 game rivals from the games (Shauna/Tierno/Trevor) so they didn't have much choice there, came up with Shota as Ash's apprentice type character who he never had before, and worked Alan in as a rival from the Mega Evolution specials.

I wonder what "good rivals" people expect at this point. The writers already exhausted most of the rival ideas, so besides friendly rivals there's nothing else.

It was telegraphed to us pretty fucking hard that he was meant to win, but couldn't because some retard who's higher in the corporate hierarchy than Yuyama and Yajima declared, "Thou shall not let Satoshi win no matter what."

I sort of just think of Ash's victory in the Kalos League as having happened as an alternate ending. It's not THE canon ending, but it's one that the staff actually working on the anime seemed to want.
