Red has a better design than most, his journey was the simplest and trainer-like without being involved in some chosen one bullshit, he doesn't waste time playing around with friends and just does literally everything on his own, even taking on actual murderers. All of that apparently with a team of mostly shitmons, but shitmons he shares a close connection with.
He's literally the image of a trainer. The ideal version of a trainer everyone has in their mind. This is literally all he cares about. He does what he loves to do. He's not forced to save the universe, he isn't chosen to be a hero or chases after a Green haired faggot, he doesn't have a loli he loves. He is a trainer and cares about batttles, and is dedicated to just this one thing. That's it.

It's not hard to image why he would be popular. I'd compare his popularity to that of Goku or other characters of that sort. They're simple in nature, but the dedication and how they do this one thing makes them look "cool", like a hero. At least that's my reason for liking him.

Personally, I don't care. I'm almost glad he has a canon team. You can still catch and use any Pokemon in Kanto. You don't have to use that team. It's like giving a protagonist a canon name or appearance. It's not going to dictate what name you should choose for your character or how you decide to use the customization.

I actually agree. I dislike when people talk about protags and how apparently all their actions in a game are all "canon". This is why I like the manga/anime. Because they give the protags other goals rather than just base it off what we do in games. Red however is the only protag that I can accept becoming "canon". I hope GF never trys to do that again.
