I think that the poison is for bug poison (that's why it must have been super effective in gen 1), but I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking when it came to ghost.

Poison because of insecticide I assume. Ghost may be because of the bugs=fear analogy, so ghosts aren't really affected by scary things since they're already scary. Fairy is really the one I don't get
