Because Dark types for the most part aren't shadow elementals, they're dirty fighters.

Most of the moves involving actual shadows/darkness (Shadow Ball, Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Shadow Force) are Ghost type, not Dark.

The type is even called the Aku (which means wicked or evil) type in Japanese.

It needed to be someone else, to become something else.

Same reason Torracat becomes a fucking heel wrestler

I think Grass/Ghost is cool, but it doesn't make much sense and nothing on the design suggests it should be Ghost

With starters, it's clear that the first and final stages are designed first, and the middle stages are just designed as in-betweens, which is why they end up so awkward looking.

Though with Dartrix, it makes sense considering the Robin Hood basis.

Actually, I recall an interview a while ago(during gen 6) about how Gamefreak wanted to design starter mid-evos to have their own character/personality(which can be seen clearly in Dartrix and Brionne) instead of just being a stepping stone to the final stage.
