Friendship is its personal relationship with its trainer, considering it resets upon trading.

Affection is its overall outlook and personality to the whole world.

and you don't have to be affectionate with somewhat to be their friend

Friendship is more like a battle bond, something more like having the Pokemon see you as a worthy trainer and master, which is why it does affect moves like return. It was also introduced in gen 1, back when GF was trying to make Pokemon and trainers feel more like a sensei and a student.

Affection is how much it likes you, like a pet.

Then again, after HGSS that original idea of friendship got a bit fucked up and now is pretty much "affection but not really".
