I mean, I like how grumpy it looks, but it makes no fucking sense for a woodpecker to turn into a toucan. The middle evolution doesn't look like an intermediate step between the two, either.

They're more based around mayflies, which go from a water strider stage to a flying stage. Other design aspects such as having no mouths, and Masquerain still skating in that one settei, reflect how mayflies have vestigal mouths at these stages and how they still have to still have to skate to lay eggs despite already having wings. Mayfly swarms are so thick, they masquerade as rainstorms on doppler.
