Goomy's Wooly World edition

New? Check the pastebin for advice on starting the game, client information, a guide on the various theme decks/products you can redeem in-game and more.

How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games) to get 45 free packs
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. Top Cut & other big trading companies will typically overprice cards, expect to get lower. Keep pack value in mind when trading.

I posted a few variants of this meme in previous threads but I think this is the final evolution of the meme.

With Herdier and 2 devo sprays and 4 hammers in the deck, you can theoretically get up to 8 crushing hammer flips (or 6 enhanced hammers if they're attaching special energies) per game. Herdier can also recover vs seekers so you can get additional uses of flare or skull grunt.
>>
I get bored and check out what trades I can take sometimes. Bought one of those packs that came with a promo card and a coin earlier today and when I put in the code for it on PTCGO I see like a million people offering a pack or more for that rockruff. Is it really that rare or something? My store had like a dozen of those packs. I thought it was just like a foil common or something. It's not even that good of a card.
>>
>>31919635
A pack is basically nothing and some people want them for Lycanrock-GX decks. The day one sucks but the midnight one will actually be pretty good, might make fighting viable again seeing as Lysandre leaving standard will make people hungry for ways to chase down retreated pokemon.
>>
>>31918870
No sir i am not interested in purchasing your "spicy",nore like mild, memes and i would like to unsubscribe from this service.
>>
>>31919686
It also has to do with trading companies, they like to build up stocks of promo cards because they can gouge for them if they wind up being rare/useful later.

Case in point, many of the black star promos that are only obtainable online through shop bundles or Canadian gems are 'worth' 50-100+ packs even though most of them are shit cards because of how rare they end up being. So a lot of it is likely speculation.
>>
Whats a good deck on the store to win theme tournaments?
>>
Chose to do the electric damage challenge, realised I had nothing outside of Raichu for it.

Took way too many attempts.
>>
>>31919774
the SM theme decks and the water one you start with are the best decks.
>>
>>31919774
I've had luck with Bright Tide.

You can use Corsola to fish for the basics you want depending on what evolutions you have. If you draw into Wingull it's okay at stalling as it heals 30 each turn.

Lanturn can do 120, Golduck can cheese a kill if you discard two water from your hand and has a free retreat, Cloyster is okay at tanking a couple hits and Primarina hits for a solid 100 while healing 30.

Only issue is if you face against the grass deck, you want to try and set up Lanturn.

If you draw into any useful item cards you can save Herdiers ability for when you want to fish them back out. Very nice getting another Timer Ball and Ultra out.

Outside of that the only other one I've really used is the Regirock deck because of Ariados/Vileplume and some okay trainers.

Or you can try and find a code for the Garchomp deck, that one can be really strong if you don't brick early.
>>
>>31919774

I dunno about tournaments but the basic water deck wins me a shitload of matches in versus just fine.

Not really but there is a chance that you'll get some good EX, and you will get some Roaring Skies so you may have the blessing of the lord and get a Shaymin-EX.

It's just a good starting point to learn the game and get some basic trainers and Pokemon that you may need in the future.
>>
>>31920390
Just bite the bullet and do them. Chances are most of the cards will be useless but it's a ton of free pulls. Get cheat engine and use the speedhack.

when will people finally get redpilled on decidueye and realize that it's actually just a shit card? Yes, it has a good ability and a ton of HP. But it's a 2nd stage that is 100% ability reliant, it's utter dogshit with abilities disabled. So in standard you get fucked by Garbodor, and in expanded you get fucked by some combination of archeops locking you out of evolution or trev/toad locking you out of using rare candies or balling for the evolution cards.

It's like the people who try to run bronzong phf and solgaleo in expanded only for some fuckface to maxie an archeops onto his bench on turn 2 and leave the poor sap with a bench full of bronzors and cosmogs. There's a reason that stage 2s tend to be a burden in expanded in particular.

Mostly because they're evolution cards and evolutions have been kind of shitty since BW era due to mediocre support and the big basics that Pokemon-EX provide, so adding another stage on a 1 or 2 stage line (notice that the viable BREAKS are mostly off of basics like Xerneas and Carbink with the exception of memefrog). The only exceptions to the 'evolutions are shit' rule are generally grass types due to FOGP and the couple of megas that are actually strong enough to justify playing the cards to evolve them.

BREAKs basically needed a much slower meta around them, with the exception of Greninja they were at best memecore due to the fact that a big basic like Darkrai or Yveltal is fully operational by turn 2 while with 2 stage evolutions/breaks, even if you have the cards for them in your hand, can't come into play until turn 3/4 at the earliest unless you use a supporter (Wally) to speed things up by one turn, but using a supporter for that reduces your overall draw speed so you're still at a disadvantage.

The fact that 2 stage pokemon have less HP than most pokemon-EX is asinine considering they take up 3 cards in your deck and the EX is one. The 2 prizes wasn't a big enough disadvantage for EXes and 2 stages hugely suffered as a result. Even if their BREAK cards were amazing, they're just too slow to use them.

>>
>>31921692
Have you seen Drampa-GX too? It looks like a lot of the basic GX are going to be just as stupid as EXes were.

Like I don't know why they decided to bump standard HP tier for basic 2 prize cards to 180. They should have left them at 160. Tauros-GX would actually be bearable if it had 160hp since you could reasonably hit OHKO range on him. But with FFB he has as much HP as most mega evolutions so he just gets one free KO on whatever you attack him with.

>>31921746
If you're the one getting the cosmetics, it depends how much value you place on them, they don't really have a fixed market value. Aside from Trevenant the cards in that trade are all shit though. Giving 10 packs plus a Lurantis and a Houndoom is pretty bad.

could someone explain Turbo Darkrai to me, like what makes it 'turbo' beyond a playset of elixir that you rarely see more than two of per game? what is the deck's goal? how do you make it function in a oneshot meta when it's a two-shot deck?

my friend and i have been fenaggling our decklists so hard that even his volcanion and my 'turbo' darkrai have become Jackie Chan ropes and ninja boy-tauros shells, i feel like we've lost our way and polluted our lists due to it

what makes the deck 'good' outside of just slowly dotting up your bench with little energy beans with a yveltal? i don't feel the deck is at all bad, just.. underwhelming, maybe. the Mega Rayquaza matchup is flat miserable for me, maybe the worst i've played against (fighting meme decks just get tauros'd out)

Darkrai Turbo's main advantage over dragons is that you reduce the probability of starting without a darkrai, you have room for OW yveltal and xp shares that let you be very efficient at retaining energy even when making trades, while other decks tend to lose a lot of momentum when they have to trade.

Of the big energy acceleration t1 decks it does have the worst matchup against volc imo because you can't really fit garb into the list. But I think it's a little more consistent overall than other top decks. Dragons is quite good though, Salamence-EX is just such a nasty card against the EX heavy meta decks. In fact, a dragons list running Salamence/Tina is what won Anaheim.
>>
>>31922700
>a dragons list running Salamence/Tina

would you suggest changing to this?

i'm currently running "jackie chan" darkrai with 2 tauros, 2 ninja boy, 2 rope, 2 switch and it's buttery as fuck but it starts up slow

the whole deck hinges on normal darkrai play while preying on the usual inability to flat ohko a 220/180 darkrai or a baiting hoopa ex

I'm quite curious where are you from since Erratum/Errata is supposed to mean a correction of text in Latin. Here's a history of its price for lulz

>Pokemon Catcher was around $5 when it first came out since it was short-printed compared to most Uncommons and Emerging Powers was a shitty set bar a few cards
>Junk Arm was rotated out of the format after 2012, so most people actually need 4 and it jumped to $8~10 each
>It was finally reprinted in Plasma Blast (2 years after it first came out) and the price dropped to $2~3 since it wasn't short printed this time
>Errata'd into requirng a coin flip a few months later and it became worthless overnight

Nah, if you want some real darkrai memes this is the memest darkrai/dragons build. Get dragonair's wish off and draw your ass off, attach like 6 energy in one turn then autowin.
>>
>>31928449
Yeah, they've been making this mistake since 5th gen. Too many big basics and not enough reasons to play stage 2s in particular. I love that they added pokemon BREAK to encourage people to play evolution decks more, but they just make evolution an even slower strategy.

I was hopeful with the new GX series they were moving away from that, but then we see the same shit, stage 2 evolutions aside from the GX cards are mostly worthless junk, and there are tons of big GX basics with even more HP than the old EX basics.
>>
>>31928459
With this build, you'd have letters over elixir. It's a guaranteed 2 energy versus a chance of 1 energy, and you don't need to accelerate before you use Dragon's Wish.
>>
>>31928530

I realized I must get delinquent, it's so easy to destroy opponent hand...
>>
>>31922127
Depends what kind of deck I'm against. My win ratio is like 80%, mostly because people get mad and concede sooner than they really should. It'd be lower if people were willing to play out I think. I tend to go for disruption against energy heavy decks like darkrai/mewtwo/yveltal and I go for attacks against decks that just use DCE to attack like gyarados, vespiquen, and passimian. Passimian is this deck's worst matchup since both your rats and umbreon get OHKO'd very easily.

This deck has some retarded energy disruption power though. Last game I played against a Darkrai Turbo deck ended with them having literally every single energy in their deck in discard. In a game that ended with him decking himself, at no point did he have more than 3 energies on the field and he was only able to attack twice total. I had 5 successful hammer hits that game plus tons of energy lost to crunch and lysandre/crunch.

Being able to move your rats and umbreon around with float stones and lysandre out stuff people are trying to build up energy on is very important to maximizing your disruption capabilities.

Not really.

An Audino-EX/M Audino-EX deck did win the World Championship in 2016; though that was more because it had a good matchup vs the meta at the time, as opposed to the deck itself being especially strong.

You clearly haven't been playing either for very long consecutively, then. YGO just spent the last 3 years errata'ing a lot of really old cards that have been rotting on the banlist so that they could unban them. MtG changes the function of cards all the fucking time while they're out of rotation, then re-introduces them with the new errata when they get reprints.

I don't think your definition of reprint was correct (I assume you meant cards that were shifted from BW1 to EPO), but yeah ... that was also a time when Pokemon sets in Japan don't come out on a fixed period and we had to wait 4~5 months before sets are released internationally. It is much better now that the Japanese set release schedule is pretty much fixed and we only need to wait around 2 months.

No, I actually like the new mechanics AND have no delusions about it "slowing down the game" in any meaningful fashion. Competitive decks will always be able to shit out whatever they want because that's how Konami makes cards. Casual decks don't give two shits about how fast or slow the game is. The only people that think this is ruining the game are either actually just bitching for the sake of bitching and don't understand the changes (who should be ignored to begin with), or people playing Masturbation decks (which don't even die if you're not bad at the game).

I'm just sick of people whining for no good reason.

Is Tauros a good fit in Accelgor/Wobs?
>>
>>31931328
if accelgor wobb is working correctly you don't build up damage counters since they are perma paralyze locked. They might get free with a PCL or something for one turn and smack a wobb but it's just a one prize card.

Tauros, as a 2 prize card, would be kind of detrimental. You want to be cycling pokemon and tauros without float stone is a lysandre target that can stall you out, also locks down one of your DCE you want to be cycling with accelgors.

>>
>>31931472
there's no point in Hala for that deck really. If you're playing it in expanded you will always have more reliable shuffle support.
>>
>>31931560
yeah, I know. I just saw Birch and thought "You know who might be better? Hala."
How the fuck does Donphan work, does it just depend on trouncing the dark matchup?
>>
>>31931576
Birch sucks ass, you generally want to use N since it both gives you an almost as good as sycamore/juniper draw in the early game and in the late game can be used to fill your deck back up to avoid decking out.

If you're playing a legacy variant PONT is a great option too. It's funny to me how Shauna is almost universally considered shit while PONT which is the same thing but draw 6 instead of 5 is extremely popular.

As for Donphan, the purpose is to attach strong energy and spinning turn out every turn to things like robo substitutes and pokemon that your opponent doesn't want to attack into, traditionally Reshiram and Zekrom, then as power creep caught up people began using Sigilyph and Primal Groudon. Now Tauros-GX is also a good option since with FFB it can be put well outside the OHKO range of most decks in the early game.

Generally you want a Mr. Mime as well to prevent things like bats from chipping your bench to death, though he's weaker at stopping bench damage than he used to be since Espeon-GX can work around him.

Personally I always felt the deck was too weak to Lysandre, but it can definitely be fun to play.

You act like you should never matchup against a weakness.

If you win several games in a row, your mmr goes up and you face better opponents. No more meme tier decks running Shauna and Tierno.

You are not the best, your deck is not the best. You just can't handle losing because you're a little bitch.
>>
>>31931792
Not the guy you're replying to. I just wish everyone would stop using Turbodark. Its really hard to deck test a deck when all you see is that piece of shit.
>>
>>31931792
Dumbass, if you win several games in a row the algorithm will pit your deck up against things it's weak to more often. When you start a Fright Night, VS Seekers and energy and you're going second against Raikou you have no choice but to topdeck a draw card or lose. It's a waste of time and annoying as fuck, and a shit feature made not to test you but rather for you not to win too much. It's why I don't play any deck using megas any more, because I know half my games will be things like my Mewtwo vs Gard or my Gard vs Scizor.

>anyone in these abysmal, casual threads knowing anything about how the game works
Everyone at league knows the client is a joke full of bugs, but it's the only fast way to test decks even if it's not at all representative of physical play.

>>31931962
Don't fucking buy decks for 'staple' cards, you'll get playsets of most of the cheap ones from opening trainer challenge packs. Get a list then buy decks if they have cards you need for it. A lot of the theme decks have one or two useful pokemon in them but it's pretty inefficient to go around buying a bunch of different decks. If there's a deck that has something you need in it you'll typically buy multiples of it. Like

wave slasher for greninja/frogadier
gears of fire for volcanion
night strikers for zoroark
iron tide for gyarados at
stone heart for ariados/vileplume

if you're not interested in playing standard decks with these cards your tokens are usually spent better elsewhere. If you go through your first 45 packs without getting a playset of supporters, then go look at the theme deck page on bulbapedia for one that has what you need. The real roadblock staple cards are trainers' mail, vs seeker and shaymin-ex which aren't available in any theme deck.

What physical products offer the best value for the new player?

Decks?

EX/GX Collector Boxes?

Elite Trainer Boxes?

Tin?

Booster Boxes?

In what order....?
>>
>>31932107
The SM sealed decks have a few decent trainers that can get you started. The Decidueye structure in particular has some really good shit for if you want to make a Grass deck on a budget, and the Nest/Timer balls help a lot.

Somebody else can correct me on this, but the EX/GX Collector boxes oftentimes feel like bait, especially if they have fucking Evolutions packs in them. More recent tins will also have those in them, so watch out for that.
>>
>>31932107
An elite trainer box to give yourself the peripherals for playing, then buy single cards to build decks, prototype on PTCGO before ordering cards.

Boosters and whatnot are generally more for collectors, when you buy a box you'll charitably get 20-30 useful cards total out of it most of which are cards you can buy as singles for a dollar or less. Some of the tins and collector boxes can be good, but don't go buying them randomly, buy them if you want to use the cards in them. At least with those you can see what you're getting and value them accordingly.

>vs Mewtwo
>win because they couldn't get out Garb in time to stop Mew
>vs fucking Typhlosion
>lose because I bricked with just one Passimian

Wow it's almost like almost every match is decided in the first few turns based on if someone has a fuckawful start or not in standard. Expanded and legacy are far, far better formats right now, at least in the client. Legacy in particular, bricks are way less likely.

hey weird question, i have a friend who plays the physical game... like a lot. and he recently gave me the codes for 141 packs about 8 decks and some other junk. I have the packs now, but my question is... Is there a reason not to open them if i haven't done all the trainer challenges yet? I'm not building twords some specific deck or anything I'm just not sure if packs get better once you've beaten all the trainer challenges...
>>
>>31932206
Smeargle has more skill involved with it than any one card in standard right now. It's such a fun card to play and play around. I wish they'd reprint it.
>>
>>31932180
>Wow it's almost like almost every match is decided in the first few turns based on if someone has a fuckawful start or not in standard
Yeah, but thats not due to an algorithm, its due to the game being fairly broken, maybe a MtG sideboard would help, but I think it would needlessly complicate a childs game

At least its not YGO, where games are won on the opening coin toss
>>
>>31932214
read the faq.

opening tradable packs is gambling. If you do it, just understand chances are you are throwing money away. The probability you draw something worth more than 1 pack of value out of any given pack is quite small, if you open all of those you might get a few such draws but overall you will greatly diminish the amount of trade value you have there which is fairly significant.

>still denying that type fucking isn't in the game, in complete defiance of reality for no reason at all

You do realize there's a hidden ELO system right? That you don't just get picked with someone at random, right? The client matches you according to a certain set of stats. When you win too much, it is likely to "challenge" you with a deck strong versus yours, and it gets extremely tedious for this to happen in the current format where almost every deck has a direct counter, in which winning relies more on you being lucky and them not than anyone's skill. Your retarded argument about picking any deck and winning is just you desperately shifting goalposts from the original point.

It's a waste of fucking time and that's what I was saying to start with. God forbid someone criticize this coded-by-monkeys client, you'll get your head ripped off.

I opened one of these IRL and got some special ass Charizard that is worth 50€, I just wonder if it was the best thing you can get from this or if there is anything else, or any bling bling stuff etc.?

And can you only trade this kind of stuff via private trades? I couldn't find the option to look for this stuff when looking to create a trade.
>>
>>31932329
There are no good cards from that, try to trade it for a lot of packs or the SM/Steam Siege promos.
>>
>>31932336
Please read the second question too, I don't think I can trade it normal ways. Also I don't have a clue about what its worth, trading companies don't have a word about it.

In YGO, there's a theoretical deck among theorycrafters called the "Perfect Pivot Staple Deck", where you take 25 staple cards, 15 cards that make up a deck, and fill your 15-card Sideboard with the composition of ANOTHER deck. This allows you to radically change your strategy in between games, completely throwing off your opponent by basically having an entirely different deck between Game 1 and Game 2. It's "theoretical" because while multiple ways to build it exist, they're never functional because the decks that you CAN build it with are usually outdated as fuck by the time you can build it, so there's no competitive viability. Most casual matches are played in Singles, so there's no point in applying the theory there.

In PTCG? Changing FIVE cards can make your deck drastically different to play against. Most people are running the same 40-50 cards (barring basic energy types), with only about 5-20 being any different from the other guy's deck. Depending on the meta, maybe even less.

>At least its not YGO, where games are won on the opening coin toss
That's only in the really bad metagames, like the BA-fest we had a couple of years ago.
>>
>>31932346
I see them for sale for ~ 5 packs. However the Evolutions and FC ones have almost nothing of value inside while SS and SM do, so it may be hard to sell.

>>31932325
Yes there's a ladder, so you play against opponents of equal skill and equal deck quality
You can expect to win 40-60% of matches

You can't win every match
>>

aight thanks, its fine, I have about 200 sm packs anyway, so not really short of packs as I don't even bling my decks.

>>
let me go straight to it;

I have only 4 challenges to complete where 2 are lv2

I will get completely nothing for that?
>>
>>31932883
Don't know exactly what you mean but level 1 you get a coin, level 2 you get sleeves and level 3 is when you get a deck box.
>>
>>31932896

eh, what will happen after I finish all types? I have 4 left and 22lv, those challenges gives some bonuses or what? what does lv affect?
>>
>>31932902
You just max out at level 30. Don't know if you get anything for completing everything but you essentially learn the game, build/try new decks and then get a coin/sleeve/box for each type.

how does this thread feel about people who collect cards just for the art and have never played a game in their lives
>>
>>31932936

>>
>>31932936
I'm one of those people because I can't find anyone to play with. But I do play PTCGO so I think that's a good middle ground for when I can't play in real life. I held off on collecting the Final Fantasy TCG because of the IRL reasons.

Plus the art on the Pokemon cards is nice to look at.
>>
>>31932936
I'd do that in real life if i had the money.

>Build decks I would never play
>Collect cards because they are pretty
>Blowing my money on something i enjoy

Sounds lovely to me.
>>
>>31932936
I don't usually say this but I really don't understand why anyone on their right mind would collect cards that he will never use, looking at cards? just having them in a fucking binder? There is no point if they are not visible somewhere, like paintings, or part of your "le gaming geek room" decoration or something.

I don't hate anyone doing it but I just think its a waste of money and doesn't make much sense.
>>
>>31933040

I don't get netdeckers.

I mean, I do, but I don't. You didn't build that deck. That's not yours. You just copied it off the internet. Most of the time you didn't even bother adding a personal touch by changing some cards around.

I'm honestly happier winning one game every 100 with my shitbrews than I'd ever be winning consistently with something someone else made.
>>
>>31933379
So, are you saying that instead of helping the kid and teaching them where they screwed up, you should just stop around and get angry about it on a Laotian Taffy Forum?

People like you are why I'm a teacher.
>>
>>31933391
Eh, people want to be competitive, and they want to be the best, so they copy what they see as success. Sure, they oftentimes miss out on the various failures that built up that success, but refinement isn't inherently bad.

The problem arises when you don't understand the inner functions of a deck or strategy you've copied, and are just mimicking things blindly without context. It's not enough to know that Lysandre is better than Pokemon Catcher even though the latter is an item; you need to know WHY.
