As long as Lillie's the most important character in the plot, Moon logically should be the MC. She already told Lillie to man up and Lillie's already taking the first step by deciding to watch the tournament even though she could've opted out.

Unless Sun loses to Kukui, which I doubt would ever happen, especially in the first round, this is going to be Sun versus Gladion. As far as we know, Moon doesn't have any battle experience. Being pit against Gladion pretty much decides her fate. They'll likely use the battle with Gladion to establish some sort of relationship between Moon and Gladion in the semi finals, and a relationship between Sun and Gladion in the finals.

As for who will win, the only way Sun can stay relevant is if he's forced to travel. Otherwise, he wouldn't give a shit about anything. That, or the battle will be called off for some reason. I'm leaning more towards the second option, personally. Having Sun beat Null so early is not going to be realistic. That said, he did fight the Tapu, and for some reason, the Tapu did attack him. He could be stronger than I think.

Now for who's the protagonist, it seems both. A Tapu event in this chapter points toward Moon, but Sun got the Pokedex, Z-crystal, has the Pager and is from Kanto. I imagine that this event was given to Moon to establish some connection between her and Lillie. After all, Sun probably already is familiar with her, so no point in giving this event to Sun, other than to give him the Z-crystal, which he got anyway.

Sun was a lot less punchable in this chapter, so if he keeps this up, I might not hate him. Not getting my hopes up though. Unless Kusaka changes something big, I doubt I'd care about him overall. I still don't give a shit about why he wants money.
Moon is still just reacting to everything, not doing much herself. I'm still disappointed she doesn't have a cute and bubbly personality. Her official design had a huge smile on her face, and I can't even imagine her manga counterpart pulling that off. Yes, I know, different medium so different personality and it's my fault for expecting that, but still a bit disappointing nonetheless. Hoping to see more of her, though. Her being the most normal person around is a plus.

Everything has personality, anon. Each action the player takes, from going to say hello to your neighbors and delivering letters, putting with Barry and helping out Looker, or taking the first step to a route with your rivals and taking up the role of the Hero to fight N, these are all part of the protagonists' personality.

The self insert part comes in because they have no dialogue and the things they do are pretty basic stuff. Their personalities are kept "simple". This makes it easier to self insert. This is also how I've seen Moon as so far. She only says the most simple things, and has done little to nothing that you wouldn't do in her situation. In other words, her personality is also "simple". It's executed a bit differently, but is overall the same concept. At least to me.

Still, it's too early for Moon, that's why I'm only talking about what I've seen so far. She has the potential to go in any direction from here, unlike Sun, and I'm looking forward to seeing that.

Personally speaking, just seeing how dedicated he is to money alone makes it not-cliche for me. I have seen many characters who want money for their relative or loved one, but all of those just aim for some really big reward. Just seeing him WORK like a normal person to get there is a pretty different take on this.

Joseph wasn't incompetent. He avoided fights, and while he was strong, he was no match for Pillar Men in terms of strength. He made up for that with his brains.
Sun, on the other hand, avoids fights for a whole another reason and has no brain whatsoever to use.
Joseph was a fun loving guy with a huge personality who didn't hesitate to say whatever was on his mind.
Sun has no personality other than being annoying and loud, and lacks the mental capacity to even speak properly.


And Moon isn't even close to Jonathan. She's nice, but other than that, they're completely different. Jonathan was a single layered character with nothing complex ever going on in his mind, only having the most basic, hero-like thoughts. Moon is a smart girl with her brains being her main strength.

If anything, Moon is Joseph and Sun is Josuke from JoJolion.

I actually liked Black. A lot, even. You call him "as generic as they get" but for me he contrast with like half a dozen other Pokémon protagonists in that while somebody like till exempel Ash apparently always dreamed of being a Pokémon trainer yet didn't seem to have any clue of how to even catch Pokémon when he actually started, Black put all his passion into actually studying Pokémon battling, allowing him to come across as a tactical genius from day "one".
What you are correct about Black however, is that he's autistic. I actually liked that especially. That's actually pretty rare for shonen protagonists.
