Gen II hype was better than the hype for any of the later gens. I remember everyone pouring over issues of Beckett for scraps of information like that picture of Bellossom with shiny colors and the reveal of "Yadoking", and months later, how the stock boy at the local walmart didn't notice or care about street dates and sold me a copy of silver a week before release. It feels like these sorts of things don't happen as much nowadays, where leaks tend to reveal the entire pokedex before release, and stores stick to dates more strictly.

Oh, to be 8 years old. Honestly, back then the game really didn't reward you or balance the game around using multiple Pokemon in a team rather than soloing the game with one thing. Always felt like a flaw that the game was easier with one Pokemon than with six.

My best friend and I got some bootleg as fuck Pokemon guide for Gold and Silver in english. The writer couldn't read Japanese for shit, so, by the time he revealed that beating the Elite Four lead to Kanto, he just posted screen shots. I also bought the first issue of Pocket Gamer magazine SPECIFICALLY to memorize the Japanese names of the GS Pokemon, not realizing that they'd get localized names.

I still have trouble talking about some Gen 2 Pokemon because I always called them by their Japanese names. Like, I have a 50/50 chance of saying Shuckle or Tsubotsubo.

Chainfished and caught shinies that weren't dragon type for the first time.
Playing Moon right now, just got rank 42 in plaza and also changed the music there to Po Town.

I still have one of my friend's pokemon he traded me in gen 3.
