I picked snivy when I first played bw, but now I like oshawott a bit more. Idk why, I just really like samurrott for some reason. I have trouble choosing faves in gens 3, 4, and 6 so next poll is going to be rough. I picked chespin in gen 6 initially because his first stage is my favorite, but I love dark types so now I feel like I'd pick froakie. Samurott's design is the sole reason I picked Oshawott though. I usually pick water, but Samurott solidified my choice compared to the other starters. It feels somewhat unique and powerful. As if it became some type of "wise guardian" than just a cartoony animal the previous starters were. I feel people are too obsessed with the big change without actually giving the design itself a chance.

Probably because the stock art and sprite animation for Oshawott in BW1 completely miss its main charm point with Dewott being the only part of the line to show it off at all with its sprite in BW1, while the anime, BW2 stock art, and animations for Oshawott in every game since BW2 actually show it off.

The scalchop is THE key piece of the design. It's both the part that made it the least appealing in early Gen V when it just looked like they glued a shell to an otter's stomach, and the the part that helped make Oshawott far more likable as the charming tool/weapon always at hand that it is.
