They know they can milk the cow for all its worth, 90s kids nostalgiastruck forever (just like me and all of you reading this right now) will still be around for the next 70 years or so.
They will keep doing the thing they've always done: never backing off the main foruma, going as slow as shit for an incompetent company they are, and still making games that we fan can like.
They toned down the new regional pokémons to 80 per gen circa, giving us forms (alolas, megas) for old mons to back up a little, that's a good step. Way healthier for the franchise
But what's gonna happen when we're gonna hit the #999 pokédex cap?
They HAVE to reboot the entire thing, they've gotta have a plan and I want to speculate.
I think they can cap 999 at gen 9, nice 3 multiplier they'd pull some symbolism shit out of it.

They can always back off making new games, and make spinoffs/remakes etc... I think GameFreak should take some tips from Zelda, Metroid (To a lesser extent) and etc... and slow down on the games.
I love pokemon, and wish for new games as soon as possible but I do think we should have a gap years where no main game is released. Pokemon fans are a lot luckier than other Nintendo fans. We don't have to wait years for a next game to be released.
