First, you playing on an emulator? Because with batteries dying left and right, it's the only way to go.

Anyway, go for Magicarp/Gyarados. It's one of my personal favorite and a powerhouse. Still, best water remain Mudpip and his following evolutions.

Pelipper is great. Deals with blaziken, learns tons of HMs, pretty bulky. Would recommend. Also, as someone who loves Emerald and always uses treecko, don't feel bad about overleveling it at the start; once grovyle hits level 29 and learns leaf blade, you pretty much win. Go back to petalburg woods and get a miracle seed to make it even better.

I was thinking either Pelipper, Milotic, or Sharpedo. Sharpedo certainly looks the coolest, but Pelipper seems the most accessible and useful, while Milotic is the strongest but biggest pain to get.

Pelipper is great, Milotic is annoying, HOWEVER if the battery is dead the 6 tiles you can catch feebas in will not change. Oh and since you picked treecko, get a fighting type mon, you'll need it later

The thing is, you need surf to get across the water to get the good rod and the surf HM is only given to you after you defeat the 5th gym

I had Emerald but My game was wiped and I couldn't save anymore. Paid 15$ to have the battery changed. Played the game. And when I was at the Battle Tree, BOOM! Game wiped. I tried to sell the game to a selle in a flea market in frustration. The seller, who is an expert, refused to buy it because he shown me that my Emeral copy was a BOOTLEG KO. I had that game for more than 10 years. So I crushed the thing to dust.

So, does that mean that legit Emerald games can last forever?

Nope.

I tried changing it but other batteries don't work for some reason and the thing is I did the same for my Silver cart and it worked just fine

Yes Emerald will last forever. RSE need the battery only for the clock. FRLG don't have clocks or batteries.

Even if the battery dies it saves just fine. If you change the battery the clock works again. The only ones that have problem saving are the fake cartridges.
