Snakes, bats, carnivorous plants, "fungi", and echinoderms were all in gen 1. The rest ("spiders", sharks, and Crocodilians all showed up at least 2 gens before the current.

Just because you can't imagine them without overdove and stylized designs, doesn't mean they can't be. Hell I can think of 2 themes off the top of my head dark/ground type "spider" for Paratropididae, and dark/steel type "spider" for Fufius.
